Job Description

Summary:   
Transactional attorney responsible for drafting, negotiating, and administering contracts and providing legal advice and support to all internal clients related to WTA Ventures (WTAV), the commercial arm of the WTA Tour.  The ideal candidate is a team player with exceptional drafting skills, a keen legal mind, and sharp business acumen.
 
Essential Duties & Responsibilities: 
  • Provide general legal counsel and advice on business/legal affairs issues to all WTAV departments.
  • Draft and administer a wide range of agreements, including but not limited to broadcast and other media, data, endorsement, licensing, marketing, non-disclosure, sponsorship, and vendor agreements.
  • Review and advise on existing agreements and other contract-related matters.
  • Interpret and administer WTA Rules and WTA and WTAV governing documents and policies.
  • Advise on trademark, copyright, and other intellectual property matters.
  • Draft communications and educational pieces to various WTA stakeholders, including players and tournaments.
  • Assist in developing, documenting, and implementing processes and policies to ensure best-practices and compliance with evolving legal and regulatory environment.
  • Conduct legal research and analysis.
  • Provide legal support and advice with respect to WTAV brand and marketing initiatives, including with respect to marketing plans, strategic projects, data privacy, and online and on-site promotions.
  • Provide legal support with respect to WTAV Board and governance matters.
Education and Experience:
  • 4-6 years of corporate/commercial transactions experience required, especially in reviewing and drafting contracts, with at least 3 years of experience in sports, entertainment, or media law. Some in-house experience preferred.
  • Very strong preference for significant, “first chair” experience in drafting and negotiating high-value broadcast and/or digital media rights agreements, especially in an international context. Experience in the ad tech, betting, data privacy, or technology sectors is also a significant plus.
 
Required Skills and Competencies:
  • Highly motivated individual comfortable working on a high volume of contracts and other matters in a fast-paced, global environment.
  • Dedicated team player with excellent commercial judgement, extraordinary attention to detail, and superior written and oral communication, analytical, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to recognize the varying interests of WTA and WTAV members and external stakeholders and to build consensus among multiple internal and external constituents.
  • Ability to work independently and effectively on multiple tasks under tight deadlines. 
  • A professional, confident demeanor and an ability to communicate effectively and positively with WTA members and all levels of the WTA and WTAV organizations, including providing counsel to senior executives.
  • JD from an accredited law school.
  • Member in good standing of at least one U.S. State Bar.

Position Type/Work Schedule:
Full Time, 40 hours a week. Typical schedule will be Monday-Friday. Must be available for occasional evenings/weekends.

The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to moderate. The passage of employees through the work area is average and normal.

The employee is required to sit for long periods; use close/distant vision; hear using the telephone; bend at the waist and knee; communicate verbally and electronically with worldwide constituency; use hands and fingers to operate a computer and telephone keyboard. Must be able to lift 50 lbs.
