Job Description
We’re looking for a motivated and confident criminal defense attorney to join our team of trial lawyers. You’ll handle a mix of misdemeanor and felony cases from first appearance through trial (and occasionally appeals), with support and mentoring from senior attorneys and staff. This role is ideal for someone who wants courtroom time, client contact, and to build a career as a skilled litigator—not just push paper or sit behind a desk.
Key Responsibilities
1. Case Management
- Handle a full caseload of criminal matters (DWI, drug, assault, theft, probation violations, etc.)
- Manage all phases: arraignment, pretrial motions, discovery, plea negotiations, trial, sentencing, and post-conviction work.
2. Client Interaction
- Meet with clients regularly to explain the legal process, discuss case strategy, and provide updates.
- Build trust and manage expectations, particularly in high-stress or emotional situations.
3. Courtroom Advocacy
- Appear in court multiple times per week across Southern Minnesota.
- Argue motions, negotiate with prosecutors, and try cases as needed—with mentoring as needed.
4. Collaboration & Growth
- Work closely with senior attorneys on serious or complex matters.
- Participate in weekly case strategy meetings and regular training focused on trial skills and criminal law updates.
Qualifications
- Admitted or waiting bar admission to the Minnesota Bar
- Excellent communication, writing, and organizational skills
- Confidence to handle court hearings solo, or eagerness to learn how quickly
- Demonstrated interest in criminal law (clinic, internship, clerkship, or coursework)
What We Offer
- Competitive salary with bonus potential
- Health & Vision insurance
- Matching 401(k)
- Ongoing training and mentorship from experienced criminal trial attorneys
- A tight-knit team environment with autonomy and real responsibility
- A chance to build your reputation in local courts
- $80,000 - $175,000/year
