Location & Schedule
In this position you will work on site at the Office of the Municipal Public Defender, at: 710 W Colfax, Denver CO 80204. This position will be 100% onsite from 8:00AM – 5:00PM with flexible work hours as needed.
Who We Are & What You'll Do
The Office of the Municipal Public Defender has been in existence since January 1, 2015, and is overseen by the City's Chief Municipal Public Defender. The creation of this office ensures that the City and County of Denver is on the same level with other progressive municipalities providing quality in-house Public Defense services for indigent citizens in the City and County of Denver. The Municipal Public Defender's Office provides legal services to the indigent accused of Denver County who are facing the possibility of jail for traffic offenses, municipal ordinance violations, and specialty courts. We are excited to invite applications for our Legal Administrative Assistant opening.
The Office of the Municipal Public Defender (OMPD) has an exciting opportunity available as a Legal Administrative Assistant. The Municipal Public Defender's Office will provide legal services to indigent defendants of Denver County who are facing the possibility of jail for municipal violations. The Legal Administrative Assistant will report directly to the Legal Administrator.
As a Legal Administrative Assistant, you will perform legal secretarial work in the Deputy Public Defender Office providing information to courts, personnel, attorneys and the public and preparing legal and managing case files.
Additionally, you can expect to:
- Review correspondence and documents and decided whether to forward the information to the attorney or enter it into the case file
- Review attorney case files for accuracy and completeness, and interprets, translates and types court proceedings entered by attorneys, following litigation
- Update case records showing current status, time, court date, location, continuations or new motions and notifies the attorney and/or witnesses of changes
- Compose correct legal pleadings from the attorney's outline of charges
- Obtain information for cases from legal sources and from the public record, as directed by attorneys
- Type forms and legal documents including amendments, summonses, court orders, discovery orders, and contempt citations and prepares motions
- Confirm and relay information such as hearing or trial dates, case status and dispositions (settlement)
- Some positions may train other clerical employees in the preparation of legal documents, prioritize work and review completed work
- Order, review and organize discovery which may come in a variety of media formats
- Performs other related duties, as assigned or requested

Required Minimum Qualifications

- Education requirement: Graduation from high school or the possession of a GED, HiSET or TASC Certificate.
- Experience Requirement: Three (3) years of general clerical experience including one (1) year of legal clerical experience preparing legal documents such as: amendments, summonses, discovery orders, citations, motions and pleadings.
- Education/Experience Equivalency: Additional appropriate education may be substituted for the minimum experience requirement.
- License/Certifications: None
