The Office of the Attorney General (OAG), a dynamic state agency with over 4000 employees throughout the State of Texas, is seeking a qualified individual with an interest in employment law to serve as a temporary Legal Assistant for the Human Resources Division. Work involves examining and preparing legal documents, conducting legal research, providing assistance to attorneys and other division staff, and making recommendations to attorneys. Duties- Conducts legal research on employment law and legal ethics, including Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 as amended, and the Texas Whistleblower Act
- Prepares and edits research memoranda, legal documents, policies, and other Human Resources (HR) related documents
- Assists with subpoenas and unemployment benefits
- Assists the Human Resources Director with special projects and tasks, as necessary
- Performs related work as assigned
- Maintains relevant knowledge necessary to perform essential job functions
- Attends work regularly in compliance with agreed-upon work schedule
- Ensures security and confidentiality of sensitive and/or protected information
- Complies with all agency policies and procedures, including those pertaining to ethics and integrity
- $2,297.25/month
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Education: Enrolled in an accredited law school
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office including Word, Excel, PowerPoint
- Superior customer service and listening skills
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Skill and ability to communicate well with people of all levels
- Skill and ability to quickly handle multiple tasks, prioritize, and meet deadlines
- Skill and ability to receive and respond positively to constructive feedback

- Ability to work in-person at assigned OAG work location, perform all assigned tasks at designated OAG work space within OAG work location, and perform in-person work with coworkers (e.g., collaborating, training, mentoring) for the entirety of every work week (unless on approved leave)
- Ability to arrange for personal transportation to get to work and for business-related travel
- Ability to work more than 20 hours as needed and in compliance with the FLSA
- Ability to lift and relocate 30 lbs.
- Ability to travel (including overnight travel) up to 5%
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Education: Currently pursuing a degree in pre-law, business, psychology, political science, history, English, or a related field
- General knowledge of employment law (e.g., Title VII of Civil Rights Act of 1964, Family and Medical Leave Act)
- Excellent writing skills with a continued interest in improving such skills
- Professional maturity and engaging personality
- Ability to begin employment on or before 9/1/2025
