Job Description

Director, Business & Legal Affairs

As one of the most prolific and recognizable names in film, we move fast, operate lean, and punch well above our weight. Looking for someone who thrives in a high-volume, high-stakes creative environment and wants their work to end up on screen.

Job Description

Blumhouse Productions is seeking a Director of Business & Legal Affairs to join its Film studio. Reporting to the SVP of Business & Legal Affairs (Film) and supporting the SVP of Business & Legal Affairs (Independent Film), this role is the drafting engine at the center of our business affairs function. You will work closely with senior dealmakers to translate negotiations into tight, well-crafted agreements — and take point on smaller deals independently as your experience and bandwidth allow. If you are a lawyer who genuinely loves the craft of drafting and wants to be deep in the material at a company with an exceptional volume of interesting projects, this is the job.

Responsibilities

  • Draft, revise and negotiate a high volume of development and production agreements, including above- and below-the-line talent agreements (producers, directors, actors, department heads), literary acquisitions, writer agreements, underlying rights agreements, and other development-related matters, in support of senior Business & Legal Affairs staff.
  • Independently negotiate and close lower-complexity deals.
  • Maintain and update standard form agreements, deal templates, and internal policies in collaboration with senior team members.
  • Manage deal tracking, correspondence, and documentation across active development projects to ensure continuity and accuracy.
  • Assist in evaluating underlying rights and chain-of-title issues.
  • Support senior staff in advising on business and legal risks, including clearances, intellectual property, guild compliance, and other production-related legal matters.
  • Stay current on legal, regulatory, and industry developments as they affect the development, production, and distribution of content — with particular attention to evolving guild and union frameworks (SAG-AFTRA, WGA, DGA), including the use of AI and issues such as digital replica rights and synthetic performance.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of experience in entertainment law, with meaningful exposure to the development and production of filmed entertainment content.
  • Experience at a law firm, studio, or production company with a strong drafting practice — candidates who have done significant transactional drafting work are strongly preferred.
  • J.D. and active membership in the California State Bar (or eligibility and willingness to register as In-House Counsel).
  • Exceptional drafting skills and a genuine enthusiasm for the craft.
  • Ability to manage a high volume of concurrent matters with accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work proactively and reliably under tight deadlines in a fast-paced production environment.
  • Strong collaborative instincts and ability to support and communicate effectively with senior dealmakers.
  • A flexible mind with a willingness to tackle matters outside area of expertise.
  • Must have a cooperative, positive, and team-oriented approach to work.

Salary
  • $160,000 - $180,000/year
