Job Description

Job Summary

Under the supervision of the assigned District Judge. Ensures daily courtroom readiness for court proceedings, assists judge in managing hearings (both in-person and virtual) and assists with case processing before and after court events.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

  1. Opens courtroom, checking lights, heat and equipment, and ensuring its readiness for court proceedings.
  2. Calls cases into court, directs parties to proper courtroom, and provides court schedule information.
  3. Maintains order in the courtroom and summons security when required to provide protection for the judge and others in the courtroom.
  4. May administers oaths to jurors, defendants and witnesses as directed by the Judge.
  5. Performs a variety of clerical tasks such as operating a computer terminal during and after court proceedings to enter case information, preparing judgments of sentence, sentencing notes and/or bench warrants. Utilizes electronic document management system for case processing, including scanning documents into the DMS, and routing documents to proper queues inside the DMS.
  6. Communicates regularly with District Court Clerk’s Office staff regarding case processing.
  7. Performs various jury related functions. Relays messages from jurors, sequesters as necessary and addresses individual juror's needs.
  8. Records court proceedings in a back-up capacity for the Judicial Secretary when necessary.
  9. Assists in other areas of the court as required.

Qualifications

  • High School graduation or equivalent.
  • One year of general office experience, preferably in a district court or closely related setting. 
  • A high level of confidentiality.
  • Computer information systems and data entry skills. 
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and organizational skills.
Certification or Licensure: May become certified as an electronic operator by the Michigan Supreme Court.

Salary
  • $18.26 - $26.51/hour
