This position can be performed remotely for candidates who reside anywhere in the U.S.

Essential Functions:

  • Researches and Prepares Written Coverage Opinions and Correspondence                                                                     

  • Reviews and analyzes facts, policy language, and researches applicable laws to prepare detailed and legally supported coverage opinions for claims personnel countrywide

  • Researches current legal trends impacting insurance coverage issues and implements knowledge of state-specific issues

  • Analyzes and interprets various policy forms, including commercial general liability policies, business auto policies, commercial property policies, public entity errors & omission policies, inland marine policies, auto dealers policies, and commercial umbrella policies.

  • Prepares draft coverage position letters

  • Reviews non-complex draft coverage position letters prepared by claims professionals for claims and provides feedback

  • Provides coverage opinions and letters

  • Responds to general coverage questions from claims professionals

  • Organizes and prioritizes projects to meet deadlines

  • Communicates with claims professionals on coverage opinions

  • Peer Review and Collaboration

  • Submits work product for team/peer review and feedback prior to sending coverage opinions and drafts correspondence to claims professionals

  • Considers and discusses all feedback to ensure work product is legally supported, well- reasoned, consistent, and professionally written

  • Reviews drafts prepared by other team members and provides timely, thoughtful, and constructive feedback

  • Participates in team discussions on coverage issues/questions

  • Prepares and Presents Training on Coverage Issues

  • Prepares training presentations for claims professionals addressing various policy forms and endorsements, including state specific coverage issues

  • Participates in in-person and/or virtual training presentations to claims professionals

  • Collaboration with Underwriting                 

  • Reviews proposed policy language and prepares memorandums to underwriting when appropriate

  • Addresses any legal considerations and potential issues raised by proposed forms and endorsements

  • Identifies issues in existing policy language and form usage and discusses implications with underwriters and claims personnel as appropriate

  • Discusses issues involving the language of the policy while demonstrating awareness of underwriting intent

  • Assists in archiving and organizing work product and resources

  • Participates in planning presentations

  • Serves on special projects related to the functions of Coverage Counsel team

Education & Experience:

  • Juris Doctorate degree

  • Licensed to practice law in at least one state

  • Eight years of experience focused on insurance coverage analysis and/or coverage litigation

  • Experience in legal research and writing

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Excellent knowledge of coverage law and legal research

  • Strong knowledge of the theory and practice of the claim function and insurance coverage

  • Excellent knowledge of insurance contracts and legal aspects of court procedures affecting legal liability for all commercial lines of insurance

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities

  • Strong knowledge of claims systems

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Strong computer skills, including knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite

Per the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, the hiring range for this position for Colorado-based team members is $110,849.18 -$142,359.75. The hiring range for other locations may vary.
