Job Description

JOB SUMMARY

Reporting directly to the Chief Victim Assistance Coordinator, responsible for assisting victims and their families involved in adult misdemeanor and juvenile criminal cases, ensuring victims are afforded their rights throughout the criminal case process. Prepares and provides various information, access to resources, and guidance through the criminal justice system. Assists with Protective Order inquiries and participates in interviews with the prosecutor and applicants.

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED

  • Communicates frequently with victims and their families to inform them of their rights, follow up on the status of their case, and answer questions regarding court settings, restitution issues, crime victim’s compensation, and other general questions
  • Serves as the liaison between the victim and prosecutor
  • Performs case entry into database for new criminal cases and Protective Orders
  • Provides victims and their families counseling referrals
  • Mails packets of information to victims and their families, including restitution forms, victim impact statements, referrals, etc.
  • Assists prosecutors in preparing the victim to testify by reviewing expectations and questions that might be asked during court proceedings, and addressing any concerns
  • Assists with various legal processes, including but not limited to intake, pretrial, dockets, hearings, etc.
  • Meets with Protective Order applicants and prepares appropriate paperwork for the application process
  • Processes and forwards victim’s paperwork to appropriate agencies
  • Processes returned mail from the victim
  • Attends monthly meetings with the Children’s Advocacy Center
  • Assists with notarization when needed
  • Communicates frequently with crime victims, families of crime victims, witnesses, attorneys, local law enforcement agencies, county personnel, and the general public
  • Attends court at a satellite location, if needed
  • Attends all meetings and trainings, as required
  • Performs special duties as assigned

  • Reports directly to – Chief Victim Assistance Coordinator

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Position involves prolonged sitting at a workstation, visual examination of documents, reaching, walking, twisting, bending, standing and occasional lifting/carrying


ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS

  • Work is primarily indoors in an air-conditioned environment
  • Regular travel between work sites as required
  • Interaction with persons accused or convicted of crimes
  • Accompanies victims and families to court for court appearances


IRREGULAR HOURS

  • Work outside of the normal office hours (Monday-Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.) may be required
  • May be deemed essential personnel in the event of an emergency
  • Regular attendance is required

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school diploma or equivalent and four (4) years of social work, criminal justice, or related experience; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite


LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS

Required within thirty (30) days of employment

  • Valid driver’s license 


Required within six (6) months of employment

  • Texas Crime Information Center (TCIC) certification
  • Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) certification
  • Texas Notary Public Commission


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS 

  • Vocational/Technical diploma or certificate
  • Bilingual: Spanish
  • Working knowledge of Odyssey, Adobe, Jabber, DocHub, SharePoint, and Digital Evidence Management System (DEMS)
