Qualifications
The Counsel, Personal Risk Services is responsible for supporting the units within the Personal Lines underwriting business in North America, with the primary responsibility of advising business clients on critical regulatory and compliance-related matters for various personal lines products and policies, including homeowners, auto, excess, recreational marine, etc.
Responsibilities:
- Communicate effectively with business partners, underwriting, claims professionals, and Legal and Compliance colleagues to provide clear guidance on coverage developments, industry trends, and new exposures in personal lines insurance;
- Contract drafting and legal review of all personal insurance products (including home, auto, valuable articles, excess, yacht, and cyber);
- Provide general regulatory advice on cancellation/nonrenewal issues, personal lines underwriting matters, customer complaints, confidentiality/non-disclosure agreements;
- Assist with responses to regulatory criticisms on product filings and regulatory inquiries;
- Conduct legal research on a variety of underwriting related issues,
- Complete the legal review of marketing material; and
- Provide legal support for sales and service units.
- Review and revise new and existing personal lines insurance products, endorsements, contracts, and other ancillary documents associated with such policies.
- Review and interpret applicable federal and state laws and regulations, legislative developments, case decisions, and claims verdicts pertaining to personal lines in order to provide comprehensive legal advice.
Qualifications
- Juris Doctor degree from an accredited U.S. law school
- Minimum 1 to 5 years of legal experience, with an ideal candidate for this entry-level counsel position having some insurance (property/casualty; personal lines a plus) or other financial institution regulatory experience, insurance coverage analysis background (including policy language development)
- Strong research and analytical skills
- Outstanding verbal and written communication/presentation skills, and an ability to offer advice on complex issues to business professionals at every level of the organization.
- Enthusiasm for working in a team-oriented environment and a strong service-oriented disposition, including the ability to multi-task.
- Ability to understand the insurance industry, client needs, and business goals, provide sound consultation, and achieve desired results.
- Proven track record of results, achievement, collaboration, teamwork, problem solving, and negotiation skills.
