Position Summary:
We are looking for a highly organized and detail-oriented Intellectual Property (IP) Paralegal to join our legal team and support the protection of our innovative medical device technologies. This role is essential in managing our growing portfolio of patents, trademarks, and other IP assets, ensuring compliance with global regulatory standards and IP laws. The ideal candidate will bring prior IP experience, especially in a life sciences or healthcare setting—and will thrive in a fast-paced, R&D-driven environment.
Location: This is an onsite position located at 2460 South 3270 West, West Valley City, Utah 84119
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist in the preparation, filing, and prosecution of U.S. and international patent and trademark applications specific to medical devices and related technologies.
- Coordinate with in-house R&D, engineering, and regulatory teams to ensure accurate technical disclosures and filings.
- Maintain the IP docketing system and monitor deadlines for patent maintenance fees, annuities, office actions, and other critical dates.
- Conduct preliminary patent and trademark searches and summarize findings for legal and technical teams.
- Support enforcement efforts, including monitoring for potential infringement and assisting with responses to competitive IP activity in the healthcare sector.
- Help manage IP-related correspondence with the USPTO, WIPO, and external counsel.
- Assist in the drafting and review of confidentiality agreements, license agreements, and invention assignment documents.
- Provide litigation support for IP disputes, including FDA-related matters, oppositions, and invalidity challenges.
- Keep accurate, up-to-date records of all IP assets in line with internal SOPs and regulatory requirements (e.g., FDA, MDR, ISO 13485).
Qualifications:
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree; Paralegal Certificate from an ABA-approved program strongly preferred.
- 3+ years of experience as an IP paralegal, with at least 1–2 years in the medical device, pharmaceutical, or broader life sciences industry.
- Familiarity with patent and trademark procedures through the USPTO, EPO, and WIPO.
- Experience working with technical documents, including invention disclosures, lab notebooks, and engineering specifications.
- Knowledge of regulatory frameworks affecting medical devices (e.g., FDA 510(k), PMA, CE Mark) is a strong plus.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail, especially when managing technical data and deadlines.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to collaborate across legal, technical, and regulatory teams.
- Proficiency in IP docketing systems (e.g., Foundation IP, Anaqua, IPfolio) and Microsoft Office.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with global patent portfolio management and coordination with foreign associates.
- Familiarity with FDA Orange Book listings, patent term extensions, and freedom-to-operate analysis.
- Exposure to intellectual property issues specific to software-enabled medical devices (e.g., SaMD).
- Biotech or engineering background a plus (e.g., coursework or prior experience).
