Job Description

Job Responsibilities

  • Interpret and apply federal and state laws regarding equal access for people with disabilities, to include monitoring these laws as they are changed or amended working to the goal of full agency compliance with federal and state disability laws. 
  • Improve the physical and programmatic access for inmates and employees with disabilities and accommodations. 
  • Create and provide training to SCDC staff on ADA and other disability rights laws and on dealing with people with disabilities. 
  • Oversee budget for improvement of provision of accommodations, staff training and other improvements. 
  • Investigate and resolve complaints/grievances from inmates and employees relating to the ADA and similar laws. 
  • Receive, investigate, and respond to Inquiries relating to ADA issues from outside organizations. 
  • Receive and facilitate accommodations requests. 
  • Develop and maintain relationships with disability rights groups and the disability community. 
  • Train and supervise agency' records coordinator.

Minimum and Additional Requirements

State of South Carolina Minimum Requirements:                                                 

A bachelor's degree and relevant experience in administrative services, public administration or business management.

SCDC Minimum Requirements: 

  • A high school diploma and 5 years experience coordinating ADA issues and 10 years experience managing programs or projects; 
OR 
  • An associate's degree with 3 years experience coordinating ADA issues and 8 years experience managing programs or projects.
OR
  • A bachelor's degree with 1 year experience coordinating ADA issues and 6 years experience managing programs or projects. 

Preferred Qualifications

Prefer 5 years' experience coordinating ADA issues to be in a correctional setting and 10 years' experience in management of programs or projects.
