REPORTS TO: Director, Asylum Seeker Legal Assistance Navigation Program; Director, Immigration Legal Program; Executive Director for Community Services
CLASSIFICATION: Part-time/Full-time
STATUS: Hourly/Salaried Non-Exempt
Position Summary: The Paralegal will provide immigration legal orientations, screenings, and “Know Your Rights” workshops to residents of LSSNY’s Sanctuary Hotels. The paralegal will provide services under the supervision of program attorneys.
Key Areas of Responsibility:
• The Paralegal will conduct “Know Your Rights” Immigration Legal workshops for residents of LSSNY Sanctuary Hotels.
• The Paralegal will assist program attorneys with the preparation and updating of presentations, templates, and other materials needed by the program.
• The Paralegal will distribute information for legal service providers to all attendees and make referrals as possible.
• The Paralegal will screen Sanctuary Hotel residents for immigration needs.
• The Paralegal will conduct an Immigration 101 training for LSSNY’s Sanctuary Hotel case managers.
• The Paralegal will assist shelter case managers to collect the documents needed for asylum seekers’ legal filings and get ready for consultation with the immigration attorneys.
• The Paralegal will assist eligible Sanctuary Hotel residents in filing immigration legal applications, including but not limited to change of address, employment authorization documents (EADs), asylum and drafting motions to change venue under the supervision of program attorneys.
• The Paralegal will maintain data and information as needed for the recording and reporting of services provided.
• Once a week, the Paralegal will convene with the program attorneys for supervision, and to discuss specific client issues.
• The Paralegal will participate in weekly staff meetings with the Immigration Legal Program (ILP).
• The Paralegal will attend relevant meetings and trainings by organizations such as LSSNY, the Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, the Immigration Court, and others as identified by the Supervising Attorney.
• Other duties as assigned.
Education:
• Bachelor’s Degree required.
Skills & Abilities:
• Fluency in Spanish required.
• At least one year of experience in immigration law required.
• Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to engage with individuals from all walks of life.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Critical assessment and analysis skills.
• Ability to manage time effectively, multi-task, determine priorities, and work independently.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
Special Position Requirements
• Must be able to pass an FBI background check as well as a CA/N check for every state in which they have resided in the last five years.
