Job Description

PARALEGAL

(GRANT-FUNDED)

Salary: $35,000.00


General Duties:

  • Providing confidential and complex secretarial support to an assigned team of attorneys (i.e. receives calls and visitors, provides general administrative assistance to the attorneys in their preparation for trials and/or contested hearings and at time, attend court hearings.)
  • Maintain attorney's calendars including events, meetings, due dates, and schedules; confirm dates and times, make meeting arrangements, and attend meetings as requested by attorneys.
  • Receive and process case files submitted by law enforcement agencies.
  • Verify that submitted media are present and in working order.
  • Maintain criminal case log.
  • Occasionally work outside of normal 8:00am to 5:00pm hours.

Knowledge required:

  • Modern office practices and procedures.
  • Filing and record keeping on criminal justice systems.
  • Operation of standard office equipment (including copiers, computers, and scanners.)
  • Routine office software (including word processing, databases, e-mail and internet access.)
  • Legal and other terminology used within the D.A.'s office and criminal justice system, as well as, language requirements of legal documents (such as pleadings, briefs, and ordinances.)

Ability to:

  • Attend work timely on a daily basis.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing (i.e. correct English usage, spelling, punctuation, and grammar). Communicate effectively verbally in Spanish.
  • Read and understand legal documents and related case materials.
  • Maintain sensitive and confidential information.
  • Accomplish the assigned workload in a timely manner. Be an independent thinker with a positive team-player attitude.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other County employees, representatives of other agencies and organizations, and members of the community.

Education and Experience:

  • High School diploma or equivalent; prefer Paralegal Certificate or Bachelor's degree.
  • At least 2 years of criminal justice or legal experience.

This is not a Civil Service covered position.
