GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The Wyoming Attorney General's Office is seeking an attorney for the Tort Litigation Division. This position will be responsible for providing legal representation to the Department of Workforce Services, including but not limited to the Workers’ Compensation Division, Unemployment Tax Division, Division of Mine Inspections and Safety, Wyoming OSHA, and the Unemployment Insurance Commission as well as the State Mining Council in administrative and court proceedings. This attorney will prepare pleadings, motions, briefs, and other filings in trial and on appeal, negotiate settlements, and attend public hearings and business meetings. This attorney will represent client agencies in administrative litigation and handle occasional litigation in State and Federal courts.  This attorney will conduct legal research and drafts and present legal conclusions and advice, process civil appeals, and compose formal and informal legal opinions.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:  The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function which may be performed at the job level.

 
  • The ability to analyze legal and factual issues and present issues clearly in either written or oral form. This position blends client counseling, regulatory and legislative analysis, and litigation in state and federal courts.  In this position, the attorney should feel comfortable speaking before courts and administrative agencies, drafting letters, pleadings, and briefs, and oral advocacy in various settings.
  • The ability to work independently and collaboratively with the Wyoming Attorney General's Office staff and State agency clients.

Qualifications

Prior legal experience is preferred but not required.  Recent graduates or law clerks are eligible and welcome to apply.   To the extent that you are not familiar with these areas of law, but you have an interest, we encourage you to apply. KNOWLEDGE: 

 
  • Knowledge of and/or experience with substantive aspects of governmental claims act statutes, constitutional law, and federal civil rights statutes.
  • Knowledge of and/or experience with state and federal rules of civil procedure.
  • Knowledge of and/or understanding of administrative law, the promulgation of administrative rules and regulations, and litigating contested case matters before administrative agencies.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:


Education:
Juris doctorate.

  • This position is at-will and is appointed by and serves at the pleasure of the Attorney General (W.S. 9-1-608).
