La Crosse County District Attorney's Office has a part-time investigative position to work 15-20 hours per week requiring flexibility in the work hours to meet the needs of the job. This is a certified law enforcement officer role, and hired individual will be deputized by the Sheriff. This role investigates complaints regarding criminal activity and exercises independent judgment within their assigned areas of responsibility and within the bounds of departmental guidelines, laws and regulations. This is an ideal role for an officer who has recently left police work and is looking to maintain skills and certification.
As a less-than-half-time position, there are no traditional benefits offered with this role. The hourly wage is $23.67.La Crosse County Respects Diversity - Essential Job Functions

Collects, identifies, and preserves evidence on suspected crimes, occasionally in conjunction with the State Crime Laboratory and FBI; classifies and files fingerprints.
Prepares detailed reports of investigations.
Obtains detailed written statements from complainants, victims, witnesses or criminals.
Appears in court to present evidence and testify against person accused of crime.
Takes photographs of various crime scenes, accidents or evidence.
Obtains and executes search and arrest warrants.
Performs tests of suspected narcotics.
Assists in locating witnesses.
Makes arrests and apprehends suspects; occasionally controls non-cooperative subject.
Attends investigative-related schools, including mandatory defensive Arrest Techniques Training.
Physical Demands: Sits in office at desk, reading, writing, talking, hearing, and using judgment and near vision to read and inspect evidence. Sits, stands and bends intermittently throughout the day. A lesser amount of time is spent moving about offices and traveling to other sites for investigations that may involve traversing rough terrain, using near and far vision. Drives vehicle. Uses defensive arrest techniques, firearms, camera. In non-routine situations: stoops, kneels, crouches, crawls, runs, climbs, lifts, carries, and restrains non-cooperative subjects. Occasionally works extended shifts and is called in for investigations during non-scheduled hours.- Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Thorough knowledge of state, county and municipal (when applicable) laws, rules and regulations.
- Thorough knowledge of evidence preparation and courtroom procedures.
- Thorough knowledge of law enforcement techniques and investigatory procedures.
- Ability to prepare clear and concise oral and written reports.
- Skill in the use of firearms and other protective equipment.
- Thorough knowledge of domestic violence and sexual assault.
- Sensitivity to victims of crimes, particularly women and their children.
- Availability to work flexible hours for interviewing witnesses and testifying in court.
- Training, Experience and Other Requirements
- Graduation from an accredited high school or GED, supplemented by advanced training in police science or related study.
- Previous experience and demonstrated competence in law enforcement as a sworn officer, beat or road patrol, detective or criminal investigator.
- Must be self-motivated and be available for flexible hours of work.
- Must have valid Wisconsin Driver's license and acceptable driving record.
- Must be certified in the use of firearms and be certified as a law enforcement officer upon hire.
- Must be a resident of State of Wisconsin on the day employment commences, pursuant to s.59.26 (1) Wis. Stats.
- Must successfully pass pre-employment drug screen.
- Must pass criminal background check suitable for working in law enforcement, which includes no felony convictions and no convictions for domestic abuse.
- Must pass character background investigation as required by the Wis. Law Enforcement Standards Board which "attest to the applicant's fitness to discharge assigned duties and responsibilities of a law enforcement officer."
