The Role: As the Counsel/Sr. Counsel - Intellectual Property Law, reporting to Deputy General Counsel, you will be responsible for supporting for supporting the General Counsel in discharging the legal affairs of the Company and its global affiliates. The Senior Manager Law & IP is primarily managing the company’s global IP portfolio, and developing the company’s strategy regarding IP. You will also support other commercial and operational matters as the need arises.  

How You Will Make an Impact:

IP Portfolio Management

  • Identify, inventory, defend and exploit SI Group intellectual property including patents, trade secrets and trademarks.
  • Develop and maintain patent landscape analyses of SI Group business segments, and develop related IP strategies (offense and defense) for improving SI Group’s competitive position.
  • Assist with preparing invention disclosures, draft patent applications, and direct outside patent counsel work.
  • Draft and negotiate IP-related contracts and licenses, including joint development agreements. 
  • Advise on IP aspects of employee on-/off-boarding processes, and other employee related IP practices.

New Product Development

  • Lead product development IP efforts from concept, thru prototype, launch, commercialization and promotion phases.
  • Conduct preliminary and final Freedom to Operate searches, and coordinate outside counsel FTO opinions.

Other Support

  • Provide general legal counselling on a range of operational, regulatory and governance matters.
  • Prepare and negotiate commercial contracts, and manage dispute resolution.
     

Creating Extraordinary Starts With:

  • J.D. degree from an accredited law school; Undergraduate degree in chemistry or chemical engineering preferred
  • Minimum 4 years work experience in a law firm (working with mid-large sized corporate clients) or company law department. In house experience preferred.
  • Experience in the chemical industry preferred
  • Experience in developing and/or implementing intellectual property-related managing systems, and training programs
  • Significant experience with trademarks, patents, trade secrets and related contracts
  • Valid license to practice law in the State of Texas preferred
  • International intellectual property legal experience is strongly preferred 
  • Admitted to patent bar preferred
