Job Description

Since our founding, we’ve constantly sought to find new ways to pursue greater economic justice: from providing fair and affordable loans, to working with partners to demand that lawmakers change unjust policies. 

We are seeking a Paralegal to join our team!

The Paralegal supports the work of Self-Help’s attorneys and teams across all lines of service through recordkeeping, contracts management, and execution of legal work.  

WHAT You'll DO: 

  • Contracts Management: Review, interpret, manage and track contracts in Self-Help’s contracts database, to include  
  • Updating database records  
  • Maintaining contract files; securing signatures; coordinating with business and operational staff when significant contract events and deadlines arise   
  • Conferring with attorneys as needed regarding contract terms or when attorney review is requested/required  
  • Corporate Recordkeeping: Maintain corporate records for Self-Help’s 7 nonprofit corporations, 2 credit unions, 2 corporations and 45+ limited liability companies by:  
  • Completing and filing annual reports in North Carolina and other jurisdictions as needed  
  • Updating and maintaining corporate records   
  • Organizing new limited liability companies and other entities, and qualifying them to operate in other jurisdictions as needed  

Other legal tasks in the following areas:   

  • Lobbying registration and reporting  
  • Responding to subpoenas for records  
  • State unemployment and insurance registrations  
  • Litigation file maintenance and discovery support  
  • Correspond with government and regulatory agencies   
  • Drafting contracts, contract terminations and renewals, notices  
  • Drafting real estate documents, including leases, deeds, rights of entry agreements, etc.  

WHAT You’ll NEED: 

  • Bachelor’s degree or paralegal degree preferred; a minimum of a high school diploma and an A.S. or A.A. degree required  
  • Attention to detail and strong organizational skills  
  • Strong written and spoken communication skills  
  • Ability to form and maintain strong relationships with internal and external customers  
  • Ability to effectively plan and prioritize work  
  • Ability to work on multiple projects at same time, and work independently to meet goals, objectives, and deadlines  
  • Resourceful self-starter with curiosity and desire to learn  
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel

Compensation:   

Competitive nonprofit compensation, based on experience, plus a generous benefits package. Compensation ranges for each position are based on local market rates and will be determined by geography, role, and experience.
