Pre-Employment Drug Testing:
All final applicants tentatively selected for this position will be required to submit to urinalysis to test for illegal drug use prior to appointments. Testing will also be performed for the presence of marijuana. An applicant with a positive test shall not be offered employment unless the applicant submits medical documentation of legally prescribed medications or a recommendation for medical marijuana.

Pre-Employment Background Investigation:
The final applicant selected for the position will be required to undergo a criminal background check.  An individual assessment of an applicant’s prior criminal convictions will be made before excluding an applicant from consideration.
The Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction is prohibited from hiring:

  • Individuals under a federal or state weapons disability if the position requires firearms certification/recertification and use;
  • Individuals who have engaged in sexual abuse in a prison or other confinement facility; have been civilly or administratively adjudicated, or convicted of engaging or attempting to engage in sexual activity in the community facilitated by force, implied threats of force, or if the victim did not or was unable to consent;
  • Individuals convicted of soliciting or providing support for an act of terrorism, terrorism, or money laundering to support terrorism;
  • Individuals who have been convicted of or pled guilty to a felony where a direct correlation exists between the position and prior criminal behavior.  

What You’ll Do: 

Works under general supervision and requires working knowledge of legal research and analysis and laws and rules:

  • Identifies legal materials needed in the pursuit of claims, answers questions, informal complaints, and grievances.
  • Assists inmates in the law library with legal research and/or drafting of pleadings.
  • Prepares (e.g. Con- ducts research, composes, types) responses to inmate inquires, complaints, and claims under the general supervision of the institutional Deputy of Special Services with legal work reviewed by Operation Support Center attorneys as required.
  • Provides notary services with non-frivolous documents and litigation pending with the courts.
  • Provides legal writing assistance (e.g. Interpret writings, explain procedures, define terminology) to inmates who cannot read and write English or lack the ability necessary to prepare coherent pleadings and such assistance is limited to making collateral attacks on criminal convictions and challenging the constitutionality of conditions of confinement.
  •  Assists inmates assigned to protracted confinement in isolation by helping to identify legal materials needed in the pursuit of claims, answering questions regarding legal research, and circulating materials to cell areas.
  • Functionally directs the operation of the Jaw library and satellite libraries (e.g. Recommends purchase of books and materials, inventories Jaw books annually for purpose of repair, replacement, and update; responds to kites/grievances relating to law library/legal services.
  • Gives work direction and training to all inmate library users and workers.
  • Works cohesively with custody personnel to ensure safe, secure working environment for both inmates and employees.
  • Keeps abreast and follows security procedures and ad- ministrative rules, regulations, and institutional policies.
  • Prepares (e.g. Researches, obtains data logs, completes forms, types, flies) schedules, reports, statistical reports or functions relative to service and use of the law library.
  • Interfaces with various departments within the institution.
  • Attends training sessions and meetings.
  • Serves on committees.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
