About the Opportunity
This is an open position at FirstEnergy Service Company, a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp., and is in the Legal group. The position reports to the Associate General Counsel – Federal Regulatory. A well-qualified applicant will have experience working on Regional Transmission Organization (RTO) tariffs (including PJM tariffs), navigating RTO stakeholder processes, and have representative experience in proceedings before the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC).
This role supports FirstEnergy’s transmission companies by advising on federal regulatory and RTO matters, with a focus on matters that impact transmission owners. Specifically, this position will represent FirstEnergy in the PJM Transmission Owners group and build consensus with peer utilities and PJM, develop company positions on federal regulatory issues in consultation with the internal business unit subject matter experts, and support FirstEnergy’s other FERC-jurisdictional issues, including monitoring and participating in PJM stakeholder processes and support state regulatory attorneys on combined federal-state matters.
This position is ON-SITE at the FEHQ - White Pond Drive, Akron/Fairlawn location
Summary of Responsibilities:
- Handle legal matters in the areas of federal public utility regulatory law, with special emphasis on PJM and other RTO issues that are heard before FERC, state commissions, and appellate tribunals.
- Work collaboratively with internal and external counsel, consultants, business unit staff, and other industry stakeholders on complex regulatory matters.
- Perform legal research, with special emphasis on Administrative Procedure Act, regulatory agency rules, and adjudications, with follow-on appellate litigation.
- Draft and review pleadings and other documents.
- Advise internal business clients and other FirstEnergy counsel on matters within the attorney’s responsibility.
- Provide legal, strategic, and business advice.
- Manage outside counsel.
Qualifications:
- J.D. from an accredited university.
- Member in good standing of at least one state bar.
- 7-10 years of litigation experience, FERC experience preferred; experience with state utility regulatory work is a plus.
- Strong work ethic and demonstrated ability to understand new areas.
