Job Description

Summary
The Valley County Prosecutor’s Office is seeking a full-time Civil Deputy Prosecuting Attorney. The primary duties include general legal work in the civil arena, including contracts and procurement, personnel, risk management, property tax issues, public records and open meeting laws, elections, and administrative appeals. Strong legal research, drafting and communication skills are essential. Position may also include child-protection cases, conservator-guardianship cases, and involuntary mental holds. This position works closely with the elected prosecutor, office attorneys and staff, Valley County elected officials and department heads.

This is a full-time position with full employee benefits.

Typical Responsibilities
The Civil Deputy Prosecuting Attorney drafts, reviews, and analyzes various legal documents, including contracts, grant applications, and other procurement-related materials, to ensure they align with Idaho State law and Valley County policy. This involves continuous research of applicable statutes and case law.

Additionally, the role provides legal advice and education to the Board of County Commissioners, department heads, and elected officials on a range of topics, including contracts, procurement, public records requests, and Open Meetings Law.

The position also involves investigating Open Meeting Law complaints, representing the State of Idaho in civil matters like child protection and mental health cases, and drafting legal documents while ensuring they adhere to proper legal principles and court procedures.

This role requires maintaining strict confidentiality, a professional demeanor, effective communication with various stakeholders, and performing on-call duties to respond to emergencies.

Typical Qualifications
An individual in this role must possess a Juris Doctorate degree from an accredited law school and be a licensed member of the Idaho State Bar.

The position also requires a thorough understanding of constitutional law, Idaho civil law concerning county governance, and prosecutorial ethics. A strong command of local judicial procedures, terminology, and practices is essential, as are effective research, negotiation, documentation, and computer skills. Candidates must be able to analyze and organize facts and evidence, and clearly articulate a case both orally and in writing. Additionally, the ability to independently appear in court to present evidence, arguments, and witnesses is required.
