Job Summary:

We are seeking an experienced Jr. Paralegal to join our dynamic immigration law team specializing in removal defense. The ideal candidate will play a vital role in supporting attorneys by managing complex casework, communicating with clients, and ensuring timely submissions to courts and immigration agencies. This position requires strong knowledge of immigration laws, primary removal proceedings, asylum applications, cancellation of removal, CAT and other deportation defenses.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Document Preparation and Filing:
    • Draft legal documents, including motions, briefs, affidavits, and responses to Notices to Appear (NTAs).
    • Prepare and submit applications for relief such as asylum (Form I-589), cancellation of removal (42(a) and 42(b)), and waivers.
    • Gather and review supporting evidence, including affidavits, expert reports, and country condition reports.
    • Assist clients in preparing for immigration court hearings and interviews.
  • Court and Agency Coordination:
    • Coordinate with the Executive Office for Immigration Review (EOIR), U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) as needed.
    • Schedule and assist with attorney preparation for hearings.
  • Research and Analysis:
    • Conduct legal research related to removal defenses, asylum law, and evolving case law using Lexis.
    • Analyze country conditions and prepare comprehensive reports to support asylum or other forms of relief.
Qualifications:
  • Education:
    • Bachelor’s degree required; paralegal certification or equivalent experience preferred.
    • Advanced knowledge of immigration law and removal proceedings is essential.
  • Experience:
    • Minimum 2+ years of experience in immigration law, with a focus on removal defense.
    • Experience drafting legal documents and preparing filings for immigration courts.
  • Skills:
    • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English (bilingual or multilingual is a plus).
    • Excellent organizational and time management skills, with the ability to manage multiple deadlines.
    • Detail-oriented with a commitment to accuracy in legal documentation.
    • Proficient in legal research tools (LexisNexis, Westlaw) and case management software.
  • Knowledge:
    • Familiarity with EOIR and USCIS procedures, the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA), and related regulations.
    • Knowledge of the rights and remedies available for individuals in removal proceedings, such as asylum, withholding of removal, and CAT (Convention Against Torture) protection.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bilingual in Spanish or another commonly spoken language in removal defense cases.
  • Experience assisting clients with trauma, particularly asylum seekers, and victims of violence or persecution.
  • Prior experience with motions to reopen and appeals to the Board of Immigration Appeals (BIA).
