Position Summary:

Disability:IN is seeking an enthusiastic, motivated, and experienced Director of Legal Affairs and Assistant General Counsel to provide legal expertise in support of our team across all areas, including programs, HR, IT, finance, and more.  The Director of Legal Affairs and Assistant General Counsel will work in collaboration and partnership with, and under the guidance of, the Vice President, Legal Affairs and General Counsel. This person will have a significant role in contracting, compliance matters, and other matters related to our global expansion. This person should be flexible with shifting priorities, comfortable with ambiguity and interested in building out the recently established in-house Legal Affairs Office of Disability:IN. 

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • To help the Legal Affairs Office provide counsel, across Disability:IN, to guide the organization’s planned growth, including globally, and to help advance its strategic goals while seeking to minimize and mitigate risk.
  • Draft, review, revise, and negotiate contracts, including, but not limited to, international agreements.
  • Research and provide counsel on compliance and a wide range of other matters, including, but not limited to employment issues, data privacy and cyber security law (including GDPR), and AI. 
  • Draft, review, and revise legal memoranda, policies, compliance documents, and other materials in support of organizational programs, initiatives and strategies.
  • Play a direct role in organization efforts to satisfy compliance obligations including, but not limited to, cooperatively working with HR on employment matters both domestic and global, and across the organization on data privacy matters both domestic and international, such as GDPR.
  • Support efforts to develop and implement legal policies, processes and procedures to increase efficiencies, responsiveness, and effectiveness of the Legal Affairs Office.
  • Assist in management of outside counsel relationships.
  • Assist in management of litigation.
  • Assist in management of intellectual property.
  • Perform such other duties as requested, directed, or assigned.

 

Work Schedule, Location, and Travel Requirements:

  • Disability:IN is a fully remote organization. All employees are expected to operate independently from their home offices daily.
  • Must be willing to travel 2-3 times per year.
  • Regular work hours = 9am-5pm, Mon.-Fri. Flexible work hours leading up to and during events, and a willingness to work outside of typical U.S. working hours, given global reach of organization.

 

Salary and Benefits:

  • Salary will be commensurate with experience.
  • Future salary adjustments will be based on individual and organizational performance.

Education and Experience:

  • Education: Juris Doctor from an accredited law school.
  • Licensed to practice law in Washington, DC or licensed elsewhere and qualified and willing to waive into the DC Bar.  
  • 6-10 years of related experience in-house at a nonprofit organization or corporation or at a law firm, ideally with nationwide and international reach. 
  • Must be authorized to work in the U.S.
  • Preferred Areas of Experience, both domestic and international – contracts, employment, data privacy and cyber security.
  • Writing sample(s) required.

  • Ability to do all of the above in a fully remote workplace.  

Technology Skills:

  • Proficiency with Zoom and Office 365 products; experience with Westlaw/Lexis-Nexis.
