The Paralegal 8-10 position has multiple functions within the CAPA Division.   First, the paralegal is expected to review attorney-drafted pleadings prior to filing to ensure accuracy, proper case citation, and consistency.  Second, the paralegal is expected to take a leading role in the CAPA Division’s Parole Appeals Unit, by working with assigned attorneys to communicate with victims and others seeking information on parole appeals and to obtain, collect, and review prisoner records and anything else considered by the Parole Board in determining whether to parole a prisoner and to make recommendations based on that review.   Third, the paralegal drafts, prepares, and e-files motions for extension of time to file pleadings in the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit under the direction and supervision of division attorney managers.  Fourth, the paralegal drafts, prepares, and e-files the State’s responses to requests by prisoners for authorization of second or successive habeas petitions in the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit under the direction and supervision of division attorney managers.  Fifth, the paralegal will be called upon to draft statements of fact for both federal and state pleadings under the direction and supervision of division attorneys.  Finally, the paralegal will be called upon to draft other legal pleadings and documents in their entirety under the direction and supervision of division attorney managers

Position Description

Required Education and Experience

Education
Possession of an associate's degree in a paralegal or legal assistant program.
 
Experience
 
Paralegal 8
No specific type or amount is required.
Paralegal 9
One year of experience equivalent to a Paralegal 8.
 
 
Paralegal E10
 
Two years of experience equivalent to a Paralegal, including one year equivalent to a Paralegal 9.

Alternate Education and Experience

Graduation from any paralegal or legal assistant program approved by the American Bar Association may be substituted for the education requirement.
