Salary Range: $41.38/hour - $52.82/hour ($80,700.00 - $103,000.00 annually) *

Paralegal Appellate Specialist is responsible for working with Firm attorneys, clients, and professionals to support a wide range of appellate matters. The Paralegal Appellate Specialist will typically perform billable tasks associated with case organization, trial court activities, preparation for appeal, and appellate oral arguments. They will provide guidance for case support professionals and organizational support to the firm’s matters. The Paralegal Appellate Specialist may have some supervisory duties relating to other staff depending on the project or case matter. This person has substantial experience in all aspects of appellate filings, procedure, and protocols. In that regard, they are the go-to support professional at the firm for all things appellate, which may include mentorship, instruction, and leadership of other staff providing appellate support projects. Development, monitoring, and other case management for pending appellate matters will be expected.
Job Functions & Responsibilities
- Manage and support matters in conjunction with letterhead as they progress towards appeal.
- Be the primary resource to matter teams regarding appellate case support.
- Provide on-site support at appellate arguments.
- Review and instruct on appellate filing guidelines.
- Prepare shell briefs and appendices.
- Interact with and manage outside vendors related to appellate work.
- Stay current on changes in appellate procedures, requirements, and rules.
- Lead teams of MTO staff providing appellate support as necessary.
- Handle cite checks for all applicable appellate jurisdictions.
- Conduct dual calendaring role on appellate matters.
- Respond to work requests from LPS management on a variety of issues and special projects, including training and professional development, staff performance, prompt and complete timekeeping, and program improvements.
- Support business development related to United States Supreme Court cases and appellate jurisdictions.
- Lead training on appellate support processes.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

- Westlaw, Lexis, Relativity, RingCentral, FileSite, iTimekeep or other related billing tool, Case Notebook or comparable software applications
Minimum Job Qualifications
- Paralegal Certification (California Business and Professional Code Sect. 6450 compliant).
- J.D. degree preferred, but not required.
- 10 years of relevant paralegal experience.
- Flexibility to work long hours and travel on short notice when needed on behalf of the Firm.
- A minimum of 5 years of appellate litigation experience in a law firm or legal environment.
- Substantial experience in all aspects of appellate practice emphasizing procedure and protocols.
- Knowledge of best appellate practices.
- Ability to articulate case (project) goals, objectives, deliverables, costs, and deadlines; identify tasks, resources, and schedule needed to achieve objectives.
- Fluency in the technical language of desktop and enterprise business information systems.
- Fluency in the technical language of Federal and State court rules and laws.
- Strong organizational, reasoning and research skills; creativity; strong written and verbal communication abilities; good judgment; attention to detail; and initiative.
- Flexibility, composure, and the ability to prioritize and handle many urgent tasks and requests simultaneously with a high level of competence and accuracy; the ability to remain composed and professional under stressful circumstances; sensitivity to ethical and confidentiality requirements; strong customer service skills.
- Teamwork, team building, and leadership experience.
- Ability to work with little supervision, demonstrating initiative and sound judgment in seeking work, managing workload, and in formulating and recommending projects or alternative ways to complete projects that will benefit the case/client.
