
Job Summary:
We are seeking a strategic and experienced In-House HR Attorney to join our Legal team. This role serves as a trusted advisor to Human Resources and business leaders, providing legal guidance on a wide range of employment law matters. The ideal candidate will have strong knowledge of federal, state, and local employment laws and a proactive approach to risk management, policy development, and employee relations.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide day-to-day legal advice on employment law issues, including hiring, performance management, discipline, terminations, leaves of absence, accommodations, wage and hour matters, and employee classifications.
- Draft, review, and update employment-related policies, procedures, and employee handbooks.
- Advise on and support internal investigations related to employee complaints, misconduct, and compliance matters.
- Assist in the resolution of employment disputes and manage outside counsel for employment litigation or administrative agency matters (e.g., EEOC, DOL, NLRB).
- Ensure legal compliance with evolving labor and employment regulations across jurisdictions.
- Support HR with compliance training, policy rollouts, and labor law updates.
- Collaborate cross-functionally to address workplace issues and reduce legal risk.
- Monitor and assess new laws and regulations impacting the workplace; communicate risks and opportunities to leadership.
- Participate in or lead company-wide compliance initiatives and diversity, equity & inclusion programs where applicable.
Qualifications:
- Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school.
- Active bar license in good standing (MI preferred for Detroit-based roles).
- 5+ years of relevant employment law experience, with at least 2 years in-house preferred.
- Deep knowledge of employment law frameworks (FMLA, ADA, FLSA, Title VII, etc.).
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with a practical, business-oriented approach.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and work cross-functionally with HR, compliance, and executive leadership.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Prior experience with medical malpractice
- Familiarity non-compete and non solicitation
