Job Description

We are a growing law firm with six distinct practice areas across four offices in three states. Best known for Litigation and Business Law, our firm is committed to providing exceptional legal services to our clients while maintaining a collaborative and dynamic work environment. We are currently seeking a detail-oriented and highly organized Financial Accountant to join our Finance Team team.

 

Position Summary:
The Financial Accountant will support the Finance Team in managing day-to-day financial activities, ensuring the accurate and timely preparation of financial statements, and assisting in the preparation of reports required by management and external stakeholders. This role is essential to managing the day-to-day accounting functions, including Trust Accounts, payroll and AP / AR. This role reports directly to the COO with a dotted line to the Fractional CFO. Specific responsibilities include managing the budget, preparing firm P&L and performance reporting, as well as assisting with K-1 preparations, PTET taxes, and other tax compliance matters.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Accounts Payable & Receivable:
    • Manage accounts payable and accounts receivable transactions, ensuring accuracy and timely payments/collections.
    • Reconcile vendor statements and follow up on outstanding payments.
    • Review client billing, assist with invoice preparation, and handle any client billing inquiries.
  • General Ledger Maintenance:
    • Maintenance of the general ledger, ensuring all transactions are recorded accurately and in a timely manner.
    • Reconcile Trust and Operating bank accounts and other balance sheet accounts monthly.
  • Financial Reporting:
    • Assist with the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
    • Prepare various accounting reports as requested by management, including detailed schedules and account analysis.
  • Payroll Support:
    • Processing of payroll for all firm employees.
    • Ensure proper tax and benefit deductions are applied, and assist in preparing payroll reports.
  • Tax and Compliance:
    • Support the Senior Accountant in preparing documents for tax filings, including partnership returns, individual K-1 forms, and PTET filings.
    • Assist in ensuring compliance with state and federal tax laws, including pass-through entity taxes (PTET).
    • Ensure compliance with internal controls, firm policies, and other regulatory requirements.
  • Firm’s Accounting Functions:
    • Maintain accurate financial accounting in the firm’s Case Management and accounting systems.
    • Ensure efficient and accurate data entry and assist in software upgrades or troubleshooting when necessary.
  • Financial Reporting and Analysis:
    • Provide leadership and accountability on delivering reporting and analysis projects as assigned, such as budgeting, forecasts, performance reporting and variance analysis.
    • Prepare reporting and analysis for management and external stakeholders upon request.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent certifications in accounting or finance.
  • Minimum of 2 years of finance / accounting experience in a law firm.
  • Minimum 5 years finance / accounting experience in a professional services environment.
  • Knowledge of general accounting principles and practices.
  • Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to prioritize tasks effectively.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information with discretion.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to adapt to a dynamic work environment.

Required Skills:

  • Experience with law firm-specific accounting, reporting, Trust Accounts and billing is required.
  • Experience with law firm Case Management systems (any leading system - none in particular)
  • Intermediate to advance skills in data modeling and variance analysis using Microsoft Excel.
  • Experience preparing partnership K-1 forms and handling PTET taxes.
  • Familiarity with regulations and tax requirements for pass-through entities.
