Duties The United States Attorney's Office (USAO) prosecutes federal offenses and defends and prosecutes the U.S. Government's interest in civil cases. The USAO for the District of Nebraska covers all counties in the State of Nebraska. The headquarters office is located in Omaha, Nebraska with a branch office located in Lincoln, Nebraska. The United States Attorney's Office for the District of Nebraska is currently recruiting for an Assistant U.S. Attorney in the Civil Division. The Civil Division is responsible for both defending the interests of the Federal Government in defensive litigation and for investigating and prosecuting affirmative civil cases for damages due to fraud upon the Federal Government and civil monetary penalties for violations of federal program regulations. The defensive caseload of the Civil Division is wide-ranging and includes, but is not limited to, immigration litigation, employment litigation, tort litigation, bankruptcy, social security matters, and defense of agency programs. The affirmative caseload of the Civil Division includes fraud cases brought under the False Claims Act and other statutes. Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress. This position will require a demonstrated ability to research complex legal issues and draft legal documents related to those issues. This is a permanent position; however, all initial attorney appointments to the Department of Justice are made on a 14-month(temporary) basis pending favorable adjudication of a background investigation. These positions are open to any United States citizen to apply. Security Requirements: Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory preemployment adjudication. This includes fingerprint, credit and tax checks, and drug testing. In addition, continued employment is subject to a favorable adjudication of a background investigation. Residency Requirements: Assistant United States Attorneys generally must reside in the district to which he or she is appointed or within 25 miles thereof.
