Chewy’s Legal Department is seeking a proactive and diligent Paralegal to support our Commercial Transactions, Intellectual Property (IP), Marketing, and Consumer Packaged Goods (CPG) legal team in Boston, MA! The Paralegal hired at a Manager level, will perform a range of key legal support activities, including contract drafting, handling Chewy’s template and form agreements, legal research, legislative tracking, product development and labeling compliance, supporting product safety processes and consumer complaints, conducting trademark screenings, and reviewing marketing materials for legal compliance. The ideal candidate is execution-focused, self-motivated, and eager to learn, with a strong commitment to improving efficiency across all tasks. They will take a proactive approach to identifying and implementing process optimizations to streamline routine legal requests and reviews.
What You'll Do:
- Legal Research: Conduct legal research related to IP, marketing regulations, product labeling, and product safety, including keeping up to date with evolving laws and regulations, federally and in all states.
- Product Support: Assist with legal reviews related to product development, labeling compliance, and product safety initiatives, including recalls.
- Marketing and Content Clearance:
- Review print, digital, and social media marketing materials for compliance with corporate policies and advertising law principles, including reviewing claims to ensure FDA, and FTC compliance.
- Identify intellectual property and trademark clearance issues and flag materials requiring further review by in-house counsel.
- Provide direction on marketing materials under the supervision of in-house counsel.
- Trademark Clearance and Prosecution:
- Conduct preliminary trademark searches, analyze search results, and draft summaries and recommendations for the IP team.
- Lead domestic and international trademark registrations, including filings, renewals, and enforcement actions.
- Contract Review and Support: Draft, review, and negotiate various commercial contracts, including vendor, service, and non-disclosure agreements. Provide daily contracting support to legal and business teams, ensuring adherence to company policies and legal requirements.
- Regulatory Review: Collaborate with marketing and sales teams to ensure that all content meets applicable legal standards, including FTC guidelines and IP law compliance. Research regulations to support product development, file state registrations, and draft policies and develop processes to support regulatory compliance.
- Process Improvements: Lead initiatives to improve and streamline processes, making routine requests and reviews more efficient.
- Collaboration: Work cross-functionally with internal teams, including quality, safety, customer service, marketing, and merchandising, to support product development, launches, marketing campaigns, and IP protection strategies.
- Documentation: Assist with drafting, reviewing, and maintaining legal documentation related to product development, safety, recalls, IP, and marketing compliance.
What You'll Need:
- Paralegal certificate from an ABA-accredited program.
- 5+ years of experience supporting legal functions related to commercial transactions, intellectual property, marketing, and/or consumer product safety.
- Experience in the CPG or e-commerce industry.
- Familiarity with intellectual property law, including trademarks and copyright.
- Experience handling domestic and international trademark registrations.
- Experience with marketing regulations and content clearance processes.
- Strong research and analytical skills, particularly in trademark and IP searches.
- Excellent communication and organizational skills, with strong attention to detail.
- Ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Familiarity with product labeling requirements and safety regulations.
- Familiarity with food and consumer product safety.
- Familiarity with patents.
- Experience supporting product recalls.
- Experience in process improvement and workflow management.
- Working knowledge of word, excel, power point, sharepoint, slack, net documents, legal tracker, smartsheets, confluence and other similar programs.
