The Utah Insurance Department is seeking a new Legal Assistant to support our Insurance Fraud Investigators and three Prosecuting Attorneys from the Attorney General’s Office. If you have experience in a law office and want to further help prosecute criminals guilty of insurance fraud, this could be the job for you.
Principal Duties
As the Legal Secretary, you will perform a variety of legal assistant duties such as:- Writing or drafting correspondence, reports, documents and/or other written materials.
- Analyzing, summarizing and/or reviewing data; reporting findings, interpreting results and/or making recommendations.
- Searching, retrieving and/or researching public and private records in accordance with applicable state and federal laws governing access to these records.
- Conducting interviews to gather or clarify information.
- Maintaining document control, tracking and tracing; reviewing case files and/or digesting trial folders, etc.
- Preparing trial or hearing materials including designing questionnaires, organizing evidence, preparing trial displays and exhibits, locating, obtaining, tracking and disseminating information/evidence, etc.
- Managing trial exhibits and evidence; ensuring procedures are followed/completed; taking notes and making observations during proceeding; participating in planning and strategy sessions, etc.
- Managing attorney scheduling and trial calendars
- Filing and tracking documents with the court such as, complaints, petitions, answers, motions, and supporting memoranda, notices, stipulations, subpoenas, pre and post-trial statements, settlement agreements, etc.
- Using a case management system to document activities, produce discovery to defense counsel, etc.
- Tracking and processing defendant restitution payments.
- Receiving calls and or greeting visitors, taking and relaying messages, responding to requests for information; providing information of directing caller/visitor to appropriate individual or group.
Minimum Qualificaitions
The best candidate for this position will have:- Experience working for, or closely with, a prosecutor’s or defender’s office, court, or other criminal justice agency where managing criminal court filings and related paperwork was a major assigned responsibility.
- Experience e-filing paperwork with the courts.
- Strong computer skills with proficiency to work in a paperless environment.
- A Legal Assistant or Paralegal degree or certification, or 4+ years of related experience.
- Preference may be given to court certified Spanish speaking transcriptionists/interpreters with potential for a hiring bonus
