JOB SUMMARY:The Legal Assistant assists the attorney with cases by organizing files, monitoring calendars, meeting deadlines, and documenting case actions. They manage Beneficial Ownership function, wage garnishments, and tax levies. They prepare drafts and file pleadings in bankruptcy court, foreclosure cases and collection cases. They work closely with the collection department to assist in their processes, and offer support to many other areas of the bank.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:- Reports to and assists the Bank’s In-House Legal Counsel.
- Keeps cases organized by establishing and maintaining files, monitoring calendars, meeting deadlines, documenting actions, inputting information into the CRM software and confirming the status of cases with attorney.
- Reviews and approves Beneficial Ownership submissions for borrowing entities.
- Facilitates and processes wage garnishments, non-wage garnishments and tax liens/levies of FCB accounts.
- Monitors, collects and applies payments from debtors derived from workout agreements or agreed orders.
- Prepares drafts and files pleadings in bankruptcy court (motions for relief from stay, claims, objections to confirmation, reaffirmation agreements).
- Prepares drafts and files pleadings in foreclosure cases and collection cases.
- Processes payments and posting of accounts payable related to costs and expenses incurred during legal action.
- Assists with general correspondence and follow-up, as assigned.
- Other duties as assigned.
TECHNICAL SKILLS NEEDED:
- Excellent and professional communication skills – verbal, written and listening.
- High quality writing skills – uses accurate word usage, grammar, spelling, and punctuation in all written correspondence.
- Strong technology skills, along with expert knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and traditional office products (copiers, fax machines, ten-keys, phones, etc.).

- Working knowledge of the banking industry, regulations, collection pleadings, bankruptcy pleadings, beneficial ownership requirements, E-Filing (Federal and State court – IL and MO).
- Basic knowledge of tickler system, trusts and powers of attorney and legal entities (corporations, partnerships, LLCs).
QUALIFICATIONS:
- High School diploma, GED or equivalent
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degree in relevant field (preferred)
- 1 – 3 years of financial services industry experience (preferred)
- 1 – 3 years of paralegal or legal assistant experience (preferred)
- Constantly uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, calculators and fax machines
- Availability to work during core bank operating hours (i.e. 8:00 am – 5:00 pm Monday through Friday)
- Occasionally requires local travel including offsite trainings and meetings
- Regularly remains in a stationary position at least 50% of the time
- Constantly moves to access supplies and equipment and to assist coworkers
- Strong understanding and willingness to maintain the highest level of confidentiality
