- Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or GED and completion of a paralegal certificate from an accredited paralegal program plus two years of paralegal experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Three or more years of experience with a specific concentration in representation of employer in Workers’ Compensation matters before the Workers’ Compensation Commission is preferred. The successful candidate must be a team player, detail-oriented, and have exceptional organizational and communication skills. Excellent computer skills with experience using Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Westlaw are necessary for the position. Experience with Laserfiche is a plus. Current valid driver's license and good driving record required. Based on the Virginia DMV point system, record must not reflect a total of six or more demerit points within the twenty-four months preceding the anticipated hire date, or one major violation of six demerit points within the preceding thirty-six months. Out of state driving records must be obtained by applicant and presented at time of interview. Record must reflect at least three years of history and be dated within thirty days of interview date. Pre-employment drug testing, FBI criminal background check and education/degree verification required.
- Duties
You will be exposed to a wide variety of litigation including Fourth Amendment use of force by police; claims of employment discrimination; breach of contract; challenges to ordinances, zoning, planning, workers’ compensation, and environmental engineering decisions; grievances; and personal injury claims. It is expected that the successful candidate will provide support to the attorneys managing the County's Workers’ Compensation litigation in the Virginia Workers’ Compensation Commission. You will be expected to draft legal correspondence, prepare pleadings and discovery responses, calendar deadlines, manage and organize document intensive cases and discovery productions, conduct legal research, coordinate experts, subpoena and analyze records, assist with deposition prep, facilitate e-filing, and engage in all aspects of trial prep and trial, including preparing motions in limine, jury instructions, exhibit lists, and witness lists, coordinating witnesses and preparing trial exhibits. You will also provide administrative support as needed to assigned attorneys and have assigned administrative responsibilities within the County Attorney's Office. Perform other work as required. This position does not require you to track or account for billable time.
