Job Description

The District Attorney’s Investigator carries out investigations under the jurisdiction of the District Attorney’s office and provides prosecution support to the District Attorney’s legal staff. The investigator provides additional office and courtroom security, escorts for the attorneys, victims, and witnesses to and from trial and other contested court hearings; participates and documents attorney interviews/trial preparation; conducts formal investigations as directed by the District Attorney, assists law enforcement officers from other jurisdictions on a case-by-case basis; and conducts criminal investigation follow-up after local law enforcement has referred a case.

Sample of Duties: 

  • Testify in court
  • Sign criminal complaints 
  • Assist the public
  • Prepare legal reports and documents
  • Prepare files for court
  • Prepare criminal histories using E-time
  • Provides security for District Attorney’s & Staff, victims, and witnesses
  • Collaborate with other law enforcement agencies and community partners
  • Participate in the interview of victims and witnesses of crimes
  • Perform routine administrative and clerical work as directed by district attorney 
  • Use Office 365 products on a daily basis
Perform related work as required or assigned 

Qualifications and Education Requirements:Any combination of education and experience sufficient to directly demonstrate possession and application of the following: 

  • Associates or Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice or related field required. 
  • Minimum of two years legal or court related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and abilities can be acquired.
  • Preferred certified law enforcement officer in Wisconsin or become a certified officer and maintain the requirements of that certification as governed by the Wisconsin Law Enforcement Standards Board under § 165.85, Wis. Stats. 
  • Possession of a valid Wisconsin driver’s license and a satisfactory driving record
  • Must pass a drug test, psychological examination, and a background check.

The physical demands are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.  The employee is regularly required to stand, walk, use hands and fingers, handle or feel objects; reach with hands and arms, hear and talk.  The employee may be required to run, sit, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, climb, balance, taste and smell.  The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
