Job Description

HOW YOU'LL MAKE AN IMPACT

As a Paralegal, you’ll have the opportunity to make a meaningful impact by helping advance the goals of USGBC and GBCI’s Legal Department. In this role, you’ll take ownership of managing day-to-day legal operations, creating and managing contracts, and ensuring compliance obligations are met—driving key initiatives such as supporting contract review and processing, managing Ironclad (our contract management platform), coordinating legal documentation, and helping promote organizational compliance and risk mitigation in alignment with our mission and strategic goals.

You’ll report to the Contract Attorney and General Counsel and be part of a collaborative and specialized team environment where your contributions will help shape impactful outcomes. You’ll work closely with teams like Operations, HR, Finance, and Program Management, and may regularly partner with external stakeholders and internal departments to streamline legal inquiries, manage compliance workflows, and ensure smooth contract administration.


Key Responsibilities

  • Draft, review, and process contracts and related legal documents under the supervision of the Contract Attorney and General Counsel.
  • Maintain and update the Ironclad contract management platform and associated records for both USGBC and GBCI.
  • Manage daily legal operations, acting as the first point of contact for internal and external legal inquiries.
  • Track and manage compliance registration obligations, including charitable solicitation filings and annual corporate reports.
  • Maintain and organize legal records, files, and other key documentation.
  • Conduct legal research and information gathering in support of the Legal Department’s work.
  • Monitor and triage incoming requests through the legal department inbox and escalate as needed.
  • Serve as notary for the organization (if not currently a notary, ability and willingness to become one within 90 days of hire is required).
  • Provide additional administrative and operational support as assigned.


REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Experience 

  • Minimum of 3 years of related professional experience in legal, compliance, or contract administration; 5–10+ years preferred.
  • Experience with nonprofit organizations is a plus.

 Education

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Paralegal certificate preferred but not required.

Technology/System(s)

  • Ironclad (Contract Lifecycle Management platform)
  • Microsoft Office Suite (e.g., Word, Excel, Outlook)
  • Document management and compliance tracking tools

 Skills

  • Excellent written and spoken communication skills
  • Strong customer service and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent time management, prioritization, and organizational abilities
  • High attention to detail and accuracy in legal documentation
  • Strong sense of personal responsibility and accountability for delivering quality work

 Certifications

  • Notary certification (or willingness to obtain within 90 days of hire)
  • Paralegal certification a plus

Salary 

Final compensation and benefits will be confirmed at the time of offer and may vary based on factors such as internal equity, relevant experience, qualifications, and employment status. Please note that salary negotiations will not extend beyond the top of the internal salary range.

LOGISTICS

Location: This position is being offered as fully remote or hybrid in-person at USGBC's office in Washington, D.C.

Work Schedule: 9-5:30 pm (with 30-minute break) local time, with possible flexibility on adjusting that time block earlier or later
