Job Description

Overview

As an integral part of the legal function, the Patent Paralegal’s responsibilities will focus on supporting the patent prosecution function of the Legal Department and will also help support other areas of the business, as necessary.  The Patent Paralegal should have at least 10 years of prior patent paralegal experience either in-house or at a law firm experience.  Biotech and/or pharma experience is preferred.   

 

Specific Responsibilities

 

·       Work directly with Iovance’s in-house patent counsel on a large in-house international patent portfolio. 

·       Assist in the preparation, filing and prosecution of U.S. and foreign patent applications, including Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) applications, and associated documents.

·       Knowledge of the USPTO database and experience with electronic filings via the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and e-PCT.

·       Knowledge of USPTO Rules and guidelines.

·       Handle submission of all documents to USPTO and PCT via e-filing.

·       Generate IDS submissions for USPTO e-filings.

·       Generate sequence listings for USPTO and PCT e-filings.

·       Correspond with foreign agents on foreign patent matters.

·       Handle annuity payments and U.S. maintenance fee payments.

·       Prepare and file U.S. and foreign assignment documents

·       Manage online file folders.

·       Track and manage deadlines.

·       Assist with patent litigation matters.

·       Arrange or directly perform a wide variety of legal formalities, including powers of attorney, notarization, apostille, inventor’s oaths and assignments.

·       Monitor inbound and outbound patent correspondence.

·       Experience with working on and navigating patent databases (e.g. CPI).

·       Work closely and collaboratively with the Docket Specialist, in-house attorneys and paralegals in the Legal Department.

·       Assist with general office and administrative duties, as assigned.

 

    Education and Qualifications

 

·       Paralegal certificate or equivalent professional experience

·       10+ years of professional paralegal experience

·       Technical experience with patent and legal databases

·       Word processing experience (Microsoft Word, Adobe pdf tools, Excel)

·       Excellent oral and written communication skills

·       Specific attention to detail and ability to prioritize

·       Ability to work well across multiple internal business groups

·       Ability to work well under pressure

·       Must be able to remain in a stationary position standing or sitting for prolonged periods of time.

·       Must be able to move about inside an office and exert up to 10 pounds of force occasionally or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.

·       Must have visual acuity to perform activities such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures, viewing a computer screen, and extensive reading.

·       This position requires repetitive motion, substantial movements (motions) of the wrist, hands, and/or fingers.

·       Must be able to communicate with others to exchange information.

Work Environment:  This job operates in a professional or remote office environment and requires operating standard office equipment and keyboards.
