Job Description

Student Intern - Expunction Project 

Position Status: 

· Part-Time

· Temporary

· 20 Hours Per Week

Reports To: Special Projects Managing Attorney

Schedule: Mon.– Fri.; Hours to be scheduled between 8:00 a.m. & 5:00 p.m CST.

Remote/On-Site/Hybrid: This is a Remote Position; Hybrid Schedules are available upon request.


Position Summary

The Student Intern plays a vital role in the Expunction Project by handling both administrative tasks and careful data gathering. In this non-lawyer role, the intern contacts courts, counties, and other organizations to collect written and heretofore unwritten details about local rules and procedures for expunction (clearing records) and non-disclosure (sealing records) in Texas. Using sound judgment and working closely with the Special Projects Managing Attorney, the intern ensures that the correct information is gathered. All the data will be organized into a database and posted on TexasLawHelp.org, serving as a valuable resource for self-represented litigants and supporting other Expunction Project initiatives.


Essential Functions

· Outreach & Data Collection: 

• Contact courts, county offices, and other relevant organizations via phone, email, or virtual (zoom) call to gather both written and unwritten details about local expunction (clearing records) and non-disclosure (sealing records) rules and procedures in Texas.

· Data Verification & Organization:

• Verify the accuracy of collected information and enter it into a comprehensive database. 

• This database will be published on TexasLawHelp.org and is a key resource for self-represented litigants as well as other Expunction Project initiatives.

· Follow-Up & Clarification:

• Proactively follow up with entities to clarify ambiguous details or heretofore unwritten practices, ensuring that all information is precise and up-to-date.

· Collaborative Work:

• Work closely with the Special Projects Managing Attorney to ensure the information is accurate, so the database can be reliably posted and used across multiple project initiatives.

Other Functions

  • Administrative Support
    • Perform general office tasks such as answering phones, managing       emails, and scheduling appointments to support the overall project       workflow.

Competencies (Required)

· Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word and Excel).

· Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

· Strong organizational skills with attention to detail.

· Ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.

· Ability to handle confidential information with discretion.


Competencies (Preferred)

· Proficiency in Spanish.

· Experience using Adobe, Microsoft Teams, and SharePoint.

Requirements

  

Education and Experience (Required)

· Must be currently enrolled in an accredited college or law school.

· Prior experience in an office or customer service setting is preferred.


Physical Requirements

· Sedentary work that involves sitting most of the time.

  • Occasional bending, squatting, and kneeling.
  • Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally to lift, carry,      push, pull, or otherwise move objects.
