DUTIES:
Responsible for recordkeeping and all duties related to reviewing, researching, and resolving matters before, during, and after legal action has been initiated.
Responsible for initiating, tracking, and monitoring all pending legal process, including initiating legal action, attending legal proceedings, filing legal documents, and communicating with SVP-Deputy General Counsel, Senior Staff Counsel, branches, members, attorneys, and other parties pre- and post-litigation.
Develop employee expertise on Legal Services related subject matter with a specific focus on research and litigation.
Participate in the organizing and maintaining records of simple and complex litigation and act as a resource for SVP-Deputy General Counsel and Senior Staff Counsel.
Respond and communicate to branch and operations employee concerns promptly and courteously with the intent to reconcile all problems.
Visualize, evaluate, and implement changes to improve business policies and procedures.
Must secure and maintain all necessary licenses as required for the position, including satisfying all continuing education requirements.
Promote policies and services set by the Board of Directors.
Keep abreast of current policies, issues, federal and state regulations.
Must be able to make critical decisions.
Work closely with the SVP-Deputy General Counsel, Senior Staff Counsel and co-workers to communicate ideas and implement change when needed.
Identify and suggest procedural changes that will improve departmental efficiency.
Act in a professional manner on and off the job and be courteous and discreet in the performance of duties and hold information in strict confidence.
Serve branches, operations departments, and members.
Accept special projects and perform other tasks as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS:
Must have a valid North Carolina driver's license.
Must be an attorney licensed to practice law in the State of North Carolina.
Must be able and willing to travel throughout the State of North Carolina to attend legal proceedings throughout all 100 North Carolina Counties as needed with minimal notice multiple times in any given work week.
Experience – Legal experience in a position involving reviewing and filing of legal documents, researching Credit Union records, and providing legal support.
SECU experience in a position involving branch and operation support or member interaction.
Must be willing to learn and acquire knowledge of SECU systems (including MARGO, 3270, Image, Default Manager).
Must become familiar with all aspects of the Credit Union’s systems, programs and departments.
Communicate and assist other departments with applicable privacy rules, regulations, and statutory requirements.
Education –
Four-year degree plus additional legal education required.
Must be an attorney licensed to practice law in the State of North Carolina.
Job requires utmost discretion and ability to handle confidential information in a professional manner.
Must have a high degree of skill in verbal and written communication.
Have a solid understanding of the Credit Union’s purposes, ideas and objectives.
Must be well organized, resourceful and have the ability to prioritize. Must be highly motivated, independent, dependable and professional.
Must maintain composure, be calm under pressure and display courteous and helpful attitude in handling members and individuals both within and outside the Credit Union.
Must possess positive attitude and seek to foster strong working relationships between branch and operations personnel.
Must be able to work a flexible schedule when appropriate.
Must be able to speak English fluently.
Must be able to cooperate and collaborate with co-workers.
Must be cordial in all interactions with others.
Must adhere to the work schedule and attendance policy established by management.

Must be able to comprehend and carry out verbal and written instructions.
Job requires substantial amount of sitting.
Use hands and fingers to press keys on a computer keyboard to enter or retrieve information.
Use hands and fingers to press telephone keypad and lift telephone receiver.
Must be able to comprehend phone calls.
Must be able to lift 5 pounds.
