Who We Are:
The Department of Public Utilities is an adjudicatory agency overseen by a three-member Commission. The Department is responsible for the oversight of investor-owned electric power, natural gas, and water utilities in the Commonwealth. In addition, the Department is charged with developing alternatives to traditional regulation, monitoring service quality, regulating transportation and gas pipeline safety, and the siting of certain energy facilities. The Department is also responsible for overseeing the safety of equipment and operations for the Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority (MBTA) as the State Safety Oversight Agency (SSOA).

The Department of Public Utilities seeks applicants for a Paralegal Specialist to perform the following duties in their Legal Division:
Position Overview:
The Legal Division staff serves as legal and policy advisor to the Commission and provides legal support to all Divisions of the Department. This position supports legal staff in its administrative responsibilities. The Paralegal Specialist will also work closely with the Department’s Director of Environmental Justice and Public Participation.
Responsibilities:
Acting as Hearing Monitor on virtual hearings and supporting hearings as needed - Assisting Hearing Officers in scheduling and booking hearings
- Supporting Hearing Officers with logistics of environmental justice, language access and public outreach planning, including managing interpretation equipment and set-up for in-person hearings
- Preparing and tracking metrics relating to outreach and public participation in hearings and public events
- Creating and maintaining logs and reports relating to public hearings
- Assisting with legal case management and database maintenance
- Developing summary of public comments received at hearing
- Assisting Legal Division staff as needed or assigned
Preferred Qualifications:
- Excellent organizational skills and attention
- Ability to work independently, multitask and coordinate activities
- Experience working with Microsoft Office and Excel
- Prior paralegal experience
- Previous experience in case management or database management
- Familiarity with SharePoint

MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS\:
Applicants must have at least (A) two years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, paraprofessional experience in legal research or legal assistant work, or (B) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below.
Substitutions\:
I. An Associate's or higher degree with a major in paralegal studies may be substituted for the required experience.
II. Completion of one year of study at a recognized, degree-granting law school may be substituted for the required experience.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS\: Based on assignment, possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Motor Vehicle Operator's License may be required.
