The purpose of this role is to provide legal assistance to Shawmut Design and Construction counsel on owner contracts, subcontracts and other legal issues that may arise.
- Generates, negotiates and finalizes contracts between the company and its clients. Develops strategy for resolution of issues related to same.
- Is familiar with industry standard contract forms and contract terms, including AIA Forms, typical client positions, and their impact on Shawmut and its business goals and practices.
- Assists with legal issues related to subcontracts as needed.
- Assists CLO and Shawmut operations management with advice on various legal and procedural issues such as scope, schedule, changes, subcontractor issues, non-performance, liens, insurance, union labor issues and lease issues.
- Develops and maintains positive relationships and communication with Shawmut’s CLO, Vice Presidents, Project Executives, Project Managers and staff.
- Acts as the liaison for and fosters positive relationships and communication with clients.
- Manages litigation matters as assigned by CLO, including management of outside counsel, coordination of discovery, review of legal invoices from outside counsel, and other tasks as required.
- Manages affirmative and defensive lien issues as necessary to protect the company’s interests. Is familiar with lien statutes and practices in various jurisdictions.
- Develops training materials and provides training to company staff regarding contractual and legal topics as assigned by CLO.
- Experience: A minimum of 5 years of Construction Industry Law experience.
- Education: JD, member of any state bar
- While Shawmut is headquartered in Massachusetts the position is hybrid - 3 Days a week in the office to start in our New York office.
- Understanding of construction principles, practices, procedures, means and methods.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.
- Demonstrated initiative, follow through, resourcefulness, efficiency and attention to detail.
- Strong working knowledge of MS Office (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Ability to learn new software and applications.
- Ability to quickly learn organization structure and stakeholders.
- Ability to create a culture of inclusion and belonging by acting with courage, humility and curiosity; desire to learn about others and self-reflect.
NYC Base Salary Range: $175,000 – $225,000 The range stated is specific to New York City. Placement within the listed range depends on many factors including, but not limited to years of experience, project size capability (for Construction & Field roles) and internal company equity.
