Job Function Statement:  
Under general direction from the Public Defender or designee, the Training Director will be responsible for conducting, implementing, executing, maintaining, and documenting the training programs for the office, including: the intern program, the internal training program, recruiting new lawyers and interns, new lawyer training, approving and budgeting for trainings, supervising and suggesting appropriate trainings for all employees, training the public about the office, and supervising the Indigent Defense Clinic. The Training Director is responsible for the recruitment and selection of interns, their training, and for all aspects of their placement with the office.  The Training Director is responsible for the recruitment, selection of, training, evaluation, and discipline when needed, of new lawyers until they pass their probationary period. In conjunction with the evaluation of new lawyers the Training Director is responsible for making recommendations about the transfer or promotion of the new lawyers. 
The Training Director shall be responsible for the ordering and distribution of all legal publications for staff. In addition to resources, the training director shall maintain the training budget and approve training requests and suggest trainings to all employees.  The Training Director will work with the Municipal Director to conduct new lawyer training from organizing and leading boot camp to scheduling and maintain the new lawyer training schedule that lasts six months post hire. In addition to new lawyer training, the Training Director will work with the Municipal Director to supervise new lawyers first trials and evaluate and supervise new lawyers until their probationary period ends. In furtherance of recruiting the new lawyer class, the Training Director shall coordinate the office’s presence at the Equal Justice Works Conference and Career Fair and coordinate the selection of a hiring class. The Training Director shall establish and maintain continuing contact with law schools and other institutions and organizations to create interest in possible internships and to announce and advertise attorney vacancies and opportunities as they may arise within this office. The Training Director shall implement and run the internal training program by selecting speakers and coordinating the trainings. The Training Director is responsible for all aspects of the Indigent Defense Clinic, including teaching the course and supervising and evaluating the students. 
The Training Director has an important role in training the public about the process to obtain a public defender, what to expect from public defenders, and the role of the public defender. Diversity and inclusion in all programs shall always be a goal of the Training Director. The Training Director may also be required to maintain an active caseload.  
  
  
Minimum Qualifications: 
Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution of higher learning. Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school. Active license to practice law in the State of Ohio. Excellent organizational, communication and interpersonal skills. Working knowledge of substantive legal issues regularly addressed by attorneys in the area of criminal law. History of a demonstrated commitment to providing criminal legal services to indigent clients. Ability to handle multiple tasks to meet deadlines. 
 
 
 
  
Illustrative Duties: 
1. The Training Director will conduct, research, evaluate, and coordinate the continuing legal education opportunities for the legal staff of the office. Implementation of training programs includes creating training calendars, building curriculum, acquiring presenters, making site arrangements, reviewing evaluations, making recommendations, and conducting needs assessment for future training programs.  Additionally, the Training Director will conduct, organize and monitor training of newly hired legal staff as proposed by the appropriate division head. 
2. The Training Director will work with directors and supervisors of the various divisions of the office to plan and schedule ongoing training for the legal staff.  Additionally, the Training Director will be the contact with outside agencies offering training opportunities to staff attorneys.  The Training Director shall register attorneys for and keep record of the outside training programs staff attorneys attend. Files required CLE reports to the Ohio Supreme Court as necessary. Oversees the coordination of the annual Veterans Day Seminar. 
3. In regard to all interns with the office, the Training Director will be responsible for all aspects of their placement with the office.  Those duties include but are not limited to:  interviewing and hiring of interns, creating and managing the curriculum of the summer program, supervising the summer interns, managing and supervising the academic year externs, and keeping year to year rosters and time logs of interns to be maintained for compliance with future bar inquiries.  The Training Director will be the office’s liaison to law schools and universities. 
4. The Training Director shall coordinate access and training with the office’s online legal research service and organize the ordering and distribution of all legal publications for staff. 
5. The Training Director will coordinate the office’s presence at the Equal Justice Works Conference and Career Fair and coordinate the selection of a hiring class each fall.  
6. The Training Director will coordinate and run the new lawyer training program. 
7. The Training Director will supervise the Indigent Defense Clinic by selecting students, teaching the course, and supervising all casework.  
8. The Training Director will work closely with the policy and communication staff, the community advisory board, and the diversity equity and inclusion committee to promote the public’s understanding of our offices role.
