SALARY GRADE: 27

The North Carolina Judicial Fellowship is seeking a qualified individual to fill its Judicial Fellows Supervising Attorney position to directly oversee the work of the Judicial Fellows, recent law school graduates or early career attorneys, (two-year term limited), participating in a program designed to gain practical experience under close supervision.

Duties include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Provide guidance, mentorship and review of legal work produced by Judicial Fellows, ensuring accuracy and adherence to court procedures.
  • Provide legal guidance, both written and oral, to approximately 400 judges in the state of North Carolina, including district and superior court.
  • Attend sessions of court as necessary to assist judges with legal issues, drafting orders, etc.
  • Maintain a system to assign work, balance the workload and oversee the work of each fellow.
  • Attend conferences to answer judge questions and be prepared to present on legal issues of significance.
  • Recruit and select incoming fellows. Monitor and coordinate hiring rotation of time-limited terms.
  • Manage and oversee a summer intern program, coordinating daily activities and legal assignments.
  • Work with the Assistant Director on any tasks assigned to the office, statutory or otherwise.
Must be willing to travel in-state as needed. This position reports to the Assistant Director of the Administrative Office of the Courts (AOC).

  • $88,467 - $151,101/year
Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

Knowledge of: appellate practice; NC General Statutes; NC Supreme Court and Court of Appeals case law; NC Rules of Appellate Procedure; federal statutes and case law; legal terminology and procedures; and information system and court technology.

Skills in: interpersonal relations; problem solving; resource and time management; multitasking; attention to detail and organization; coordinating events; vendor and contract management; information system and court technologies; appellate procedures; and effective oral and written communication.

Ability to: conduct in depth legal research and analysis as it pertains to relevant case law; draft orders and legal memos for trial court judges; interact effectively with judicial fellows, trial court judges, and trial court personnel; comprehend abstract legal concepts; and prepare and present training seminars.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Juris Doctor from an ABA accredited law school, an active license to practice law in North Carolina, and two (2) years of legal or appellate experience.
