Description

The Hennepin County Attorney’s Office (HCAO) is seeking a Public Information Officer. This position works closely with the County Attorney, Deputy County Attorney, and Division Managers as the department's communications manager to provide direction and strategy for all communications covering cases and/or initiatives of the HCAO.

Location and hours:
This position is hybrid and will be performed both on-site at the Hennepin County Government Center, 300 South 6th Street, Minneapolis, MN 55487 and remote as job duties require. Work hours will be Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. While this position is designated as hybrid, based on current requirements hires must reside in or relocate to Minnesota or Wisconsin.

In this position, you will:
  • Represent the office with the County Attorney’s elected and appointment officials, including representing the County Attorney at community meetings and in committees within and outside Hennepin County.
  • Advise the County Attorney, deputy County Attorneys, and division managers on all media issues.
  • Develop, implement, and monitor performance metrics across media relations, digital platforms, multimedia services, and strategic communication efforts. 
  • Guide and maintain internal and external media relations management to drive headlines and raise awareness around office initiates. 
  • Direct development of work assignments, resolving problems, and review/approval or work assignments. 
  • Develop comprehensive plan to integrate all aspects of the County Attorney's Office communications infrastructure that includes but is not limited to; write, edit, and format content for website, annual report, brochures, emails, newsletters, articles, speeches, presentations, social media, and public service announcements.
  • Manage various visual design and brand standards, social media policy, and multimedia services contracts. 
  • Develop and manage the department's e-mail interaction with law enforcement, the courts, and the community related to crime activity.
  • Project planning related to the County Attorney's mission, vision, and annual goals.
Need to have:
  • One of the following:
    • Bachelor's degree in business administration or other field appropriate to the position and five years of experience related to the position.
    • Note: Experience in general administrative work related to the management of departmental/organizational operations or in a specialty area appropriate to the position may be substituted for education on a year for year basis.
Nice to have:
  • Experience:
    • Working with either the print or broadcast media for at least five years or more.
    • Working directly with executive-level leaders.
    • Preparing public information (press statements, web information, brochures, etc.) for a governmental or public law office. 
    • Writing and editing publications for a wide array of audiences; ability to take highly technical information and write for a range of readers.
    • Collaborating with diverse communities.
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills; including public speaking and presenting to large groups.
  • Knowledge and understanding of most effective communication mediums and vehicles. 
  • Knowledge and understanding of the criminal legal system and court process.
  • Ability to:
    • Lead and supervise the work of others. 
    • Build and nurture collaborative relationships with a variety of customers/partners, both internal and external. 
    • Manage multiple projects while being responsive to immediate, unexpected demands.
    • Think strategically and manage diverse and multiple functions. 
    • Anticipate potential ramifications of choices/decisions made and advise in advance of taking action.
