Key Responsibilities
- Self-directed case management from inception to resolution, including legal research, drafting and reviewing filings and correspondence, discovery, motion practice, trial advocacy, and appellate advocacy.
- Develop comprehensive defense strategies, including thorough analysis of evidence, legal precedents, and potential procedural issues.
- Negotiate with prosecutors to secure favorable outcomes, such as reduced charges or sentences, where appropriate.
- Advocate zealously for clients in court, presenting compelling arguments and cross-examining witnesses effectively.
- Collaborate with investigators and expert witnesses to build robust cases.
- Maintain detailed case files and provide regular updates to clients regarding the status of their cases.
- Assign tasks to, supervise, and provide instruction to subordinates and be the responsible party for all work under your scope of management.
- Stay informed on changes in criminal law and procedural rules to provide the most effective representation.
- Draft exceptional motions and briefs to advance the client's position, including novel and unique arguments.
- Draft and file interlocutory appeals and appear for oral arguments before state and federal appellate courts.
- Assist in training and instructing new employees, interns, and law clerks in the performance of job duties and lead service training with employees, interns, and law clerks within the office.
- Education: Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school.
- Bar Admission: Licensed to practice law in Michigan, or eligible for licensure in Michigan before start date.
- Experience:
- Minimum of 10 years prosecuting or defending major felony cases.
- Demonstrated experience in handling multiple felony trials to verdict.
- Deep understanding of criminal law, trial procedures, and evidentiary standards.
- Skills:
- Exceptional oral and written communication skills.
- Strong negotiation and analytical abilities.
- Effective case and time management.
- Commitment to client advocacy and ethical practice.
- Experience with high-profile or complex criminal cases.
- Established relationships with local legal and judicial communities in Michigan.
- Fluency in a foreign language.
- Work in a practice area that is unique and virtually uncharted and help develop or change the law.
