Reporting to the Chief Compliance Officer, the Legal Counsel - Regulatory Affairs & Sustainability role provides as needed legal support to each of ITW’s Segments and Corporate functions on a variety of regulatory matters, with a principal focus on monitoring and advising ITW businesses regarding existing and developing legal and regulatory issues affecting the company’s operations and products. This individual must also seamlessly coordinate input from ITW Segments and other subject matter experts within the Legal and other Corporate departments (i.e., EHSS, Trade Compliance, Strategic Sourcing, Commercial, Ethics & Compliance, etc.).
Primary Responsibilities:
- Work collaboratively with, and manage expectations of, a broad range of internal and external stakeholders to proactively monitor, analyze, and advise on proposed and pending legislation impacting the business to ensure ITW’s 84 global business divisions are fully informed regarding enterprise risks/opportunities
- Provide ongoing legal support to ITW businesses to ensure awareness of, and compliance with, emerging, new, and existing laws and regulations in key areas such as Environmental Impact, Product Stewardship, and Sustainability.
- Ensure ITW has appropriate resources and relationships in place to proactively address regulatory risk by managing external resources (e.g. law firms and lobbyists) in a cost effective manner.
- Provide strategic thought leadership and tactical support for engaging with governmental and regulatory agencies; provide excellent customer service and facilitate efficient and practical resolution of regulatory questions.
- Lead and provide support for special projects and conduct relevant legal research for the department.
- JD is required.
- 7+ years of experience interpreting and providing actionable, concise direction on regulatory matters is required. Expertise in Environmental Impact, Product Stewardship, and Sustainability compliance including agency interaction is strongly preferred.
- A successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to approach this role from a practical business perspective and demonstrate a high degree of strategic thinking, legal analysis, and creative problem-solving skills.
- This role is located at the Glenview corporate office and in the office full-time with flexibility in hours to meet the demands of the role.
- Demonstrated attention to detail while maintaining a view of the big picture.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to effectively communicate with global stakeholders in all regions where ITW conducts business.
- Self-starter who is collaborative, collegial, flexible and able to multi-task while working in ITW’s unique decentralized and entrepreneurial global team environment.
- Exhibits a passion for understanding ITW’s diverse businesses and contributing in a meaningful way to its strategy and long-term strategic enterprise goals.
