Under direction, is responsible for assisting victims of domestic violence in gaining access to, and utilizing, various services, resources and programs which are available within the public system and the community at large; conducts victims awareness and education classes; and performs related duties as required.Description
Duties and Responsibilities:
Conducts interviews with the victim(s) at the Family Justice Center
Assists in minimizing the victim’s isolation by increasing knowledge of community resources available
Conducts follow-up phone calls after initial interview to insure victim has received the resources they need
Assists in reducing victim’s tolerance of violence by creating awareness of the cycles of violence and the warning signs of impending violence
Provides referrals to various services including, but not limited to, emergency safe shelters, transportation arrangements, short term counseling, and medical treatment
Assists victims in filing protective orders at the District Attorney’s Office as often as necessary
Provides one on one sessions including safety planning, risk assessment with women and children who have been abused by their spouse or partners, identifying potential danger in the family’s present circumstances, and identifying resources and support for changes in living arrangements
Conducts Victims of Crime Awareness and Education classes which include small group discussions on cycle of violence, warning signs of impending violence and community resources
Performs related duties as required
Minimum Qualifications:
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Services, Behavioral Science, or closely related field, and two years of experience working with family violence cases; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
Knowledge of the criminal justice system and available social services.
Skill to communicate effectively with hostile, abusive and irrational individuals; skill in managing multiple projects simultaneously
Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing; ability to handle confidential information with discretion; ability to adjust to rapidly fluctuating situations, ability to operate personal computer; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, County employees, outside agencies, crime victims and the public
Must be bilingual in English and Spanish
Must have a valid Texas driver’s license
Must secure and maintain a favorable background investigation and clearance
Must clear a pre-employment physical
May be required to work more than 40 hours during the workweek
Working Environment and Physical Demands:
Working conditions are primarily in an office environment and on-site community training as scheduled
Occasionally moves items weighing up to 15 pounds
Occasionally moves about the office
Frequently communicates with others; must be able to exchange accurate information
Constantly operates a computer and other office productivity machinery
Positions self to perform essential functions
Must be able to remain in a stationary position
