Assistant General Counsel (Regular, Full-Time)

General Counsel’s Office


Reporting to the General Counsel & Assistant Secretary the Assistant General Counsel provides direct counsel to staff in all departments as needed or assigned, and is responsible for identifying and analyzing legal issues, drafting and negotiating a wide range of contracts and other documents, presenting clear written or oral recommendations, and assuring legal and ethical compliance across all of the Museum’s activities. This position will enable the legal department to manage the full range of the Museum's legal, policy and ethical needs and to support its operations and programming. 


Responsibilities

  • Advises on all aspects of day-to-day legal, policy and ethical issues for the museum

  • Under the supervision and direction of the General Counsel, drafts, reviews, provides legal advice, and if needed negotiates agreements in collaboration with the business managers in a wide variety of areas, including: public programming, special events, intellectual property and licensing, tax, compliance with internal policies and procedures, acquisitions, gifts, pledges, exhibitions, new initiatives, technology and software, publishing, real estate, employment /human resources, consulting, communications and marketing, social media, risk management and insurance, development, security and facility maintenance

  • When directed by General Counsel, advises, participates in, and provides legal support for claims and other litigation-related issues, including mediation and arbitrations, investigations, discovery and document production

  • Consults, coordinates with, and helps supervise outside counsel as needed

  • Works with General Counsel and senior management in establishing, implementing and updating museum policies and procedures to ensure they remain compliant with legal requirements and good governance practices

  • Assists with the review of financial statements and informational tax returns for compliance with applicable state and federal legal requirements. 

  • Participates as needed in advocacy on policy matters, community and government relations, which may include cooperation with other museums and museum associations

  • Maintains regular and reliable attendance 


Benefits:

  • The expected annual salary for this Los Angeles, CA based position is $155,000.00 - $165,000.00, subject to change, and the position is eligible for LACMA’s comprehensive benefits package, including pension plan.

Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor degree from a US accredited law school, with excellent academic credentials

  • Minimum 3 years of experience in related field

  • California license to practice law, or ability to become licensed in California

  • Knowledge of local, state and federal law governing the Office of General Counsel’s primary areas of practice, including: contracts, torts, tax, finance, employment, property, civil procedure, nonprofit governance, intellectual property, and cultural property

  • Excellent analytical, drafting, negotiation, research and oral and written communication skills, as well as the ability to work collaboratively, as part of a small legal team, and with colleagues outside of the legal department and external stakeholders, including outside counsel

  • Demonstrated ability to work in a dynamic environment, meeting deadlines with high quality deliverables while potentially learning new areas of law 

Salary
  • $165,000 - $155,000/year
