Job Description

What You'll Do:

Legal College Intern responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Support the Office of Legal Counsel and assist the department in its mission
  • Work under immediate supervision of the Acting Chief Legal Counsel; work as part of the Legal team with each attorney and each Senior Legal Assistant
  • Assist staff in coordinating legal activities
  • Research, writing, and assisting with projects 
  • Assist with projects needing legal research
  • Research, analyze, investigate and draft legal documents
  • Prepare, review and edit legal correspondence, memoranda and other legal documents under guidance of supervisor
  • Research and analyze legal sources such as statutes, case law, administrative records, opinions, articles, treaties, policies, and rules and regulations
  • Attend and observe administrative hearings
  • Assist attorneys and Senior Legal Assistants with case management
  • Follow policies and rules to ensure security and confidentiality of sensitive and/or protected information
  • Comply with all agency policies and procedures, including those pertaining to ethics and integrity
  • Apply your knowledge of administrative law
  • Use Lexis/Nexis legal research tools
  • Perform other duties as directed

This internship is eligible for hybrid work pursuant to the Ohio Lottery Commission’s Teleworking Policy, which incorporates both telework and in-office work days. If approved, the successful candidate will be required to comply with the requirements established in the Ohio Lottery Commission’s telework agreement and policy.

Work Hours\:  Part-time variable work schedule between the hours of 8\:00am-5\:00pm, Monday-Friday; may work up to 29 hours per week.

This position is non-exempt (eligible for overtime) from the Fair Labor Standards Act.

This position is Unclassified (exempt from the Classified Service).

EMPLOYMENT CONTINGENT UPON SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION OF A CRIMINAL BACKGROUND CHECK AS REQUIRED BY SECTION 3770.02(D) OF THE OHIO REVISED CODE.

Employment and Educational Requirements:
All applicants must be currently and continuously enrolled in law school.  Applicants not enrolled in at least one course will not be eligible for the internship.
Applicants must have successfully completed at least their first year of law school from an ABA approved school of law in the United States to be considered for this internship.
 
All applicants must submit a letter from the college registrar's office, on official college letterhead, clearly stating the following information:
  • Verification of enrollment in the 2025 Spring semester/quarter
  • Verification of status (e.g., freshman, sophomore, junior, senior, graduate, law, etc.)
  • Major course of study
  • Dates the 2025 Spring semester/quarter began and ends
  • Estimated date of graduation

An internship at the Ohio Lottery Commission will add to your professional development and give you practical work experience.  The internship is an opportunity to learn and work in your field of study, expand on your classroom knowledge, gain hands-on exposure, and learn about interesting careers in State government.  College Interns will work closely with agency Office of Legal Counsel staff members on a variety of assignments.
 
The internship will begin in May 2025 and end in September 2025. 
 
The position is temporary in nature, benefits are not offered.
