The Attorney 2 will perform intermediate level legal assistance to the Vice President & General Counsel in providing legal services for MLGW Division; defend/prosecute lawsuits, draft/evaluate contracts, compliance issues, oversee and trained assigned employees. ESSENTIAL DUTIES\: Review and evaluate investigations; based on laws or facts, determine the method of investigation, its extent, legal sufficiency of evidence, applicable laws and the basis and method of settlement. If settlement is not indicated, determine method of defense at law or equity in the court.
Perform legal research on pending cases and current problems. Render legal services and opinions of rights, obligations and privileges for Division employees as requested. Draft, negotiate and prepare contracts and other legal documents; review and approve proposed contracts and legal documents. Negotiate, in accordance with the Vice President & General Counsel, insurance representatives, lawyers, etc. regarding settlements. Interview and take depositions of witnesses; arrange for and conduct pre-trial conferences; and keep Division up to date on new/revised laws, compliance standards, and regulations. Represent the Division and try cases in court; and may act as agent of the Division in various transactions. Supervise, direct and train assigned employees such as\: paralegals, medical services, support staff and/or legal students. Perform other duties as directed.
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS
Must have passed the State of Tennessee Bar Examination and be licensed to practice in the state of Tennessee. A valid driver's license from state of residence is required.
EDUCATION
Juris Doctorate Degree is required.
EXPERIENCE
2 to 4 years of comparable experience in the practice of law. -OR Internal applicants must have 2 years of experience as an Attorney 1 and meet
all other career ladder requirements for advancement.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Must successfully complete Supervisor Assessment Center training within 3 months from date of hire. Physical Demands\: Requires sedentary work involving standing or walking for brief periods, exerting up to 10 pounds of force on a regular basis; and some dexterity in operating office equipment.
