Litigation Associate – Stage 1
Position Overview
The Litigation Associate (Stage 1) will manage the earliest phases of litigation, focusing on initiating cases and ensuring all foundational work is executed thoroughly and accurately. This role requires a detail-oriented attorney who can interact directly with clients, draft and file complaints, and coordinate with the litigation team to ensure a strong start for each case.
Key Responsibilities
- Client Intake & Case Initiation
- Conduct initial client meetings to gather case details, facts, and supporting documentation.
- Assess the viability of claims and provide recommendations on next steps.
- Maintain professional communication with clients to manage expectations and build trust.
- Drafting & Filing Complaints
- Draft, prepare, and file complaints with the appropriate court(s).
- Ensure compliance with jurisdictional rules, deadlines, and procedural requirements.
- Coordinate with paralegals and support staff to assemble exhibits, service documents, and verify accuracy prior to filing.
- Case Strategy Development
- Collaborate with senior attorneys to identify potential claims, defendants, and legal theories.
- Research applicable statutes, case law, and procedural rules to strengthen pleadings.
- Develop timelines and checklists for early litigation milestones.
- Coordination & Early Litigation Support
- Track and monitor filing deadlines, court responses, and service of process.
- Work with internal teams to prepare for the transition into discovery (Stage 2 litigation).
- Attend initial hearings, case management conferences, or settlement discussions as assigned.
- Documentation & Compliance
- Ensure all filings and client documents comply with firm policies, court rules, and ethical obligations.
- Keep case management systems updated with accurate, timely information.
- Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school.
- Active member of the California State Bar (newly barred attorneys encouraged to apply).
- Knowledge of arbitration procedures, discovery rules, and civil procedure.
- Strong legal research, writing, and oral advocacy skills.
- Ability to manage deadlines and multiple cases in a fast-paced environment.
- Excellent interpersonal skills for effective collaboration and negotiation.
