Job Description

Objectives

Individual is responsible for providing paralegal support to Prosecutor and Assistant Prosecuting Attorneys in the Civil Division. Emphasis will be on responding to public records requests, but will also involve other civil paralegal support.

Job Standards


  • Assists with managing, processing, and responding to public records requests. 
  • Conducts legal research on various topics/issues and drafts various legal documents, including, but not limited to, affidavits, notices, complaints, answers, motions, judgment entries, discovery documents, settlement documents, and various other pleading and legal documents for civil cases.
  • Assists with civil discovery, including, but not limited to, drafting/preparing documents to request discovery and gathering, reviewing, and drafting/ preparation of documents to respond to discovery requests.
  • Prepares forfeiture petitions and supporting and supplemental documents.
  • Assists with preparing, filing, processing, and responding to foreclosure actions on behalf of the Delaware County Treasurer, as needed.
  • Assists with zoning violations/actions, as needed, including, but not limited to, drafting violation letters, performing title research, drafting complaints and other various pleadings, motions, and documents to initiate, process, and conclude zoning violation actions.  
  • Assists with nuisance resolutions/actions, as needed, including, but not limited to, drafting violation letters, performing title research, preparing and drafting nuisance resolutions, drafting complaints and other various pleadings, motions, and documents to initiate, process, and conclude nuisance violation actions. 
  • Actively enters civil matters and other information into and maintains matters in the Prosecutor’s Office Matrix case management system.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Prosecuting Attorney, Executive Administrator, and Chief Civil Assistant Prosecutor.
 
JOB REQUIREMENTS:
 
Equipment:

Ability to operate normal office equipment such as computer, copier, fax machine, telephone, calculator, paper shredder, motor vehicle, and other equipment necessary to perform duties. Good understanding of and ability to use Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, and Power Point) and Internet (Chrome). Experience with the Matrix case management system is preferred, but not required.  
 
Preferred Skills/Expertise:

  • Knowledge of the Delaware County, Ohio government structure, operations, functions, practices, procedures and legal processes.
  • Demonstrated integrity and reliability, and ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • General knowledge of the Ohio Revised Code and the legal/court system in Ohio, to include court processes/procedures.
  • Ability to deal with many variables, define and solve problems, collect, analyze and interpret data, establish facts and determine specific action, evaluate and improve processes and/or programs, efficiency/effectiveness. 
  • Ability to work with the public and/or clients who may be upset, distraught, irate, irrational, emotional or mentally or otherwise unable to function within a reasonable range of constructive behaviors.
  • Ability to work independently as well as work as part of a coordinated team of professionals, under pressure, and to set and achieve goals. 
  • Ability to organize and maintain large volumes of information and paperwork.
  • Ability to interpret and implement policies, procedures, and governmental codes. 
  • Superior interpersonal skills and aptitude for developing and maintaining effective working relationships through teamwork and cooperation with supervisors, subordinates, employees and the general public.
Preferred Educational and Licensing:

Paralegal certificate or equivalent licensure.
At least two (2) years of legal experience, preferably in civil law.
Must possess a valid driver’s license and have an acceptable driving record.

Reporting:
 
Individual reports directly to the Chief Civil Assistant Prosecutor, Executive Administrator and the Prosecuting Attorney. The individual exercises independent judgment with direction.
