Position Overview

The Regulatory Compliance Paralegal is responsible for carrying out duties under the guidance of the regulatory compliance leadership to ensure business practices comply with all applicable laws, regulations, and corporate standards. The Regulatory Compliance Paralegal performs complex research (of the relevant laws, rules and regulations impacting the enterprise) and regulatory analysis, in order to monitor regulations, asses risk and mitigate concern in support of the business operations according to defined project plans. The Regulatory Compliance Paralegal assesses compliance of company rules, guidelines, procedures, filings, forms, and programs. The Regulatory Compliance Paralegal handles service requests from the department of insurance and any other business entity related to the company business and operation.    

The following are the usual, basic and essential functions of the position.  These functions are not to be construed as an exhaustive list of all responsibilities, duties and skills required.

Essential Job Functions

  • Maintain a proficient knowledge of state insurance rules, and other applicable rules and regulations and their impact on the lines of business, including compliance with rules and regulations which may impact the various business groups, for the various states in which we operate
  • Research and analyze circulars, state bulletins, and other state or federal legislative changes and provide recommendations when changes are required
  • Prepare and file insurance entity and corporation licensing and renewals
  • Manage producer and adjuster licenses
  • Ensure that company systems and products follow state and/or federal regulations
  • Interact with state officials and independently respond to insurance department complaints and inquiries
  • Independently research and respond to consumer complaints from state departments or other regulatory agencies, customers and other interested parties
  • Draft, develop and monitor business unit policies and procedures in compliance with vendor contracts, license requirements, federal and state laws and other governmental bodies
  • Assist in researching matters as necessary to determine scope and impact to the line of business in evaluating compliance with regulatory requirements and adequate controls
  • Conduct routine audits and investigations on existing policies and procedures to ensure continuous compliance
  • Compile information and maintain relevant records related to quality improvement and compliance monitoring activities for internal use and external audits
  • Provide oral and written communication regarding compliance matters to various departments and levels of management as needed
  • Maintain and organize files, and our regulatory compliance spreadsheets, including keeping records of filings and filing deadlines
  • Prepare and submit regulatory filings, including annual, quarterly, and supplemental statements, and data calls
  • Assist with legal research on insurance regulation and matters affecting the insurance industry
  • Support all corporate governance initiatives
  • All other duties assigned by Management

Required Knowledge, Skills & Ability

  • Bachelor’s degree, associate’s degree or other advanced degree in paralegal studies or legal studies
  • Paralegal certification
  • Minimum six (6) years’ experience in Regulatory Compliance
  • Strong research skills in regulatory compliance, preferably in the Property & Casualty Insurance Industry
  • High degree of knowledge with respect to insurance regulation
  • Experience with interpreting laws, regulations, industry guidelines, statutes, administrative regulations, and precedents
  • Strong ability to multi-task on projects while meeting target dates
  • Ability to work under pressure and attention to detail are essential
  • Ability to work independently, as well as in a team environment
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and Excel is required
